favor Pinon Mare In Chicago Purse Has Witch Sir, Bodens Pa!, Pomps Gal and Late Thread To Beat in Lincoln Event WASHINGTON PARK, Homewood, HI., May 30. C. H. "Frenchy" Pinon, colorful turf figure who owns the Happy Stable, has been depending on his aged mare, Happy Issue, to "carry" his modest entourage, for several years. The record reveals that the nine-year-old daughter of Bow to Me Achieve has seldom let him down, but thus far this season she has been unable to triumph in a race. This bad streak, however, has an excellent chance to be broken tomorrow when the oldster faces a fair field of middle-distance runners in the Chicago Purse, a test of a mile and one - eighth for four - year - olds and upward. Because of her comparatively poor form this year, she gets in the feature under 106 pounds, and Tony Skoronski, Chicago veteran, who led his foes during the Sportsmans Park meeting, is to handle the reins. Facing the Happy Stable representative will be William H. Bishops Bodens Pal, William M. Peaveys Puddle Jumper, N. L. Raffelmans Pomps Gal, Louis Schlossers Witch Sir, Mrs. K. Niles Boat Man and Mrs. John L. Oglesbys Late Thread. Happy Issue has started only once at the meeting, competing against the crack sprinters in the Crete Handicap, won by Delegate. She had arrived here only a couple of days before from Golden Gate Fields and it was surprising, to many, that Pinon started her in the sprint. As was expected under the circumstances she was badly beaten. The mare, however, should be in better condition to show to her best advantage in the Chicago. She has had ample time since to get the feel of the track after her long trek from San Francisco and the weights appear decidedly in her favor. Hollywood Cup Winner of 1944 Back in 1944 when Happy Issue was a four-year-old, she showed the greatest effort in her career by taking the Hollywood Gold Cup, worth 0,600 to the winner. y Since then she has finished close up in numerous stakes. Another colorful fact about the mare is that last year she was one of the few horses in the history of the sport here to wear "spectacles." Pinon claimed that she often was affected by flying clods, so he had isingless put over her blinkers and she raced well with this improvised equipment. Witch Sir is another in the field who at one time possessed stakes-winning ability. In 1946 he was one of the bright stars of the Illinois season when he captured both the Equipoise Mile and the Stars and Stripes Handicap at Arlington Park. In the former test, he whipped the famous Calumet gelding Armed, who at the time was considered well-nigh invincible. As fate would have it, though, Witch Sir has not won a stakes since his Stars and Stripes conquest. He has been bothered by much unsoundness, and his Chicago owner has put him on the sidelines many times. He started only once during the Oaklawn Park meeting, won that race and has been idle since. It is reported that he has trained well over this track, and his connections are confident that he will show a good performance. Late Thread, voted "queen" of Sportsmans Park by reason of her victory in the ,000 Chicago Handicap, is attempting to get back in winning stride. Later, at the Cicero plant, she was burdened with 121 pounds and was unable to spot weight in the Spring Handicap and was beaten. Trainer John Oglesby has kept her going along steadily in her trials and, under the conditions, it appears that she stands an excellent chance. Eldon Nelson, who has been flashing good saddle form lately, is slated to ride. Bodens Pal showed a good effort over the turf here on Saturday, closing much ground through the final quarter to finish fourth back of Happy C, Jack S. L. and Kaslick. The race was contested on the turf course, and he has never established himself as a star on the grass. Pomps Gal showed a couple of excellent efforts in Kentucky before shipping here. Last Saturday, however, she was far back in a race won by Clevelander The six-year-old daughter of Pomponius Afghar, however, is capable of turning on a good dash of early speed and, in view of the fact that there doesnt seem many in -the race capable of matching it, she could very likely stay on top throughout.
