Dr. Almac set the pace while under a snug grip, turning back the bids of Alexis through the first five furlongs. When Alexis faltered, it was Royal Governor who rallied from third position to do battle with the leader. Once roused by McLean, the response of Royal Governor was immediate. The Delaware-owned five-year-old flashed past Dr. Almac and rapidly attained a commanding margin, one which was to increase through the final stages. The Wilmington and the Brandywine were the only engagements of the meeting for Royal Governor, and todays purse of ,875 gave him earnings of 8,075 for the holiday week-end. Many felt that Royal Governor would not be started in the Brandywine, but trainer Jim Ryan said that, since his charge has no future engagements, he felt it only logical to race him today, then ship him to the farm for a brief respite. Little excuse could be offered for the campaigners behind Royal Governor, except to state that they just couldnt keep up with their well-conditioned opponent. Coincidence was always less than five lengths off the pacemaker, but, when Atkinson roused him, he just wasnt capable of offering a serious threat.
