Fishers Dixiana-bred Shy Guy coasted to an impressive and popular triumph here today in the fifteenth running of the 5,000 Colonel F. M. Alger Memorial Handicap. Given a well-judged ride by Robert Lee Baird, Shy Guy, four-year-old son of Chal-ledon and Tootsiecake, sped to the finish of the one mile and a furlong holiday stake four and one-half lengths before Love Sonnet, who raced under the silks of the late C. Approaching the stretch, Shy Guy moved to Papa Redbird and, after a brief duel, put the Goodwin colt away and opened up a two-length advantage at the three-sixteenths pole. Papa Redbird, weary from his early pacemaking task, dropped back and Love Sonnet, Turbine and Pellicle then began their closing bids in order. Shy Guy was not under urging during the final furlong.
