Coaltown, Assault and Other Name Horses Work Out Over Belmont Strip First Two Go Five-Eighths In l:0245 and 1 :003A; Ponder And Old Rockport Also Drill BELMONT PARK, Elmont, L. I., N. Y., May 30. Assault, Coaltown, Capot, Old Rockport, Phalanx, Ponder and other "names" were on the racing strip over the week-end undergoing training trials. They were breezed from three furlongs to one mile and a furlong in preparation for later engagements: Coaltown, who defaulted from the Suburban when he was assigned 138 pounds, has no remaining stake engagements here. He was declared from the six-furlong Roseben Handicap and was not weighted by handicapper John B. Campbell. Coaltown will be included in the shipment that trainer Jimmy Jones will head westward shortly after the running of the Belmont Stalces, the final day of this meeting. Coaltown displayed his usual high speed in his test, which was at five furlongs. He was hard held throughout and negotiated the distance in 1:02. Coaltown has not been under colors at this meeting, his lone New York appearance being in the Gallant Fox at Jamaica. Assault, who is on the comeback trail, turned in a handy five-furlong effort. This fellow, who is close to the top of. the list of money winners, breezed the -distance in 1:00. He was accompanied by Curandero and the move was accomplished in handy fashion. Trainer Max Hirsch has not as yet decided when he will start the King Ranch colorbearer. Hirsch also breezed But Why Not and Flying Missel. But Why Not is a nominee for the Top Flight Handicap, which is fashioned for fillies and mares three-year-olds and over at one and one-sixteenth miles. This 5,000 offering is to be run on Wednesday, June 8. Curandero is a potential for the Peter Pan to be run over the week-end. Calumets Ponder and Clifford Mooers Old Rockport, Belmont eligibles, were tested at six furlongs and nine furlongs, respectively. Ponder moved along at a steady pace and was timed in 1:14. Old Rockport, who was freshened up since arriving here, had a stern test. He was called upon to catch and overhaul a stablemate in his trial. He broke well back of Brave Reward, estimated at 20 lengths, and when set down readily caught and overhauled that fellow. His fractional times were :36, :48and, 1:14, 1:27, 1:40 and out the distance in 1:53. Greentrees Capot and George D. Wide-ners Reveille, Belmont nominees, were given easy gallops, an indication of longer and more exacting trials tomorrow. Capot breezed three furlongs in :35 while Reveille stepped five furlongs in 1:03. Halt, who is destined for Suffolk Downs, he is Yankee Handicap probable, was called upon for a test at one mile and a furlong. He moved evenly over the distance in 1:53. Phalanx, C. V. Whitneys hope for handicaps later in the year, advanced another step in his training. He breezed an easy mile in. 1 :42. Fred W. Hoopers Ocean Drive, also a Yankee possibility, displayed his speed over the training track. He was sent one mile and one furlong and was timed in 1:59and, in hand all the way.
