Fancy Flyer Visits Winners Circle Takes Tomasello In Suffolk Upset Graham and Byrum Colt Leads First Nighter by Length and Half; 36,689 View Program SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., May 30. The silks of Graham and Byrum carried by Fancy Flyer forged to the front in the final yards of the Tomasello Memorial Handicap at Suffolk Downs this afternoon to score a mild upset over the favored Cherry Oca Stable representative, First Nighter. The winners margin was a length and one-half in a spirited event that proved interesting to the 36,689 patrons. A nose back of First Nighter, Marlet Stables Column gained the minor honors over Honeywell Farms Mesmer. Todays attendance was by far the largest of the season but failed to reach the mark of last year by nearly 2,000. The early races were run under cloudy skies but prior to the running of the Peabody Handicap light rains fell, then ceased before the horses came on the track for the Tomasello. Directly after the winner crossed the finish line the skies appeared to open and a heavy downpour sent the large gathering on the apron scurrying for shelter. j Ridden by Pat Milligan, Fancy Flyer earned ,175 of the gross 2,350 purse. The nine furlongs of the feature were covered in 1:52. Backers of the Sky Raider colt received 8.40. After a slight delay at the gate caused by Circle K Farms Misleader, starter Bob Frend sent the field away in close alignment. Fancy Flyer was the quickest to break and immediately headed for the inside position while losing command to Clarence Hartwicks Flag Drill. The latter moved out from his outside position and was a length and a half clear as the field settled down for the run down the back-stretch. Flag Drill Placed Under Pressure Fancy Flyer was next in line clear of Mesmer and Rabies, with the others strung out in Indian file. Leaving the three-eighths pole, Flag Drill was put to pressure as Fancy Flyer moved on the inside and Mesmer challenged on the outside. Column was close up but out in the middle of the track. First Nighter broke away from Mother by slipping through the inside. Billy Cook sent First Nighter between horses on the turn to loom as the real threat. At this point Fancy Flyer and Mesmer had collared the leader and were battling for supremacy with the ultimate winner showing the most stamina and gradually drawing clear. First Nighter then encountered his first setback. Cook was unable to keep the favorite from lugging towards the rail and had to take him out repeatedly. Column, meanwhile, was gaining on the outside but Fancy Flyer had passed the finish line when First Nighter straightened to drive to the end, edging the Marlet representative. I
