Zeeland Tallies at Garden State Park To End Win Streak of Gnu at Three Bayards Gray Colorbearer Leads Jerrys Best by Two Lengths; Agrarian-U Third By WILLIAM C. PHILLIPS Staff Correspondent GARDEN STATE PARK, Camden, N. J., May 22. — J. A. Bayards Zeeland found a hole on the inside after entering the stretch in the sixth race here this afternoon, and he quickly made good, use of it by rapidly scurrying through and opening a clear lead that was increased to two lengths at the finish. Brook Stables Jerrys Best, showing a much improved effort over todays -soft footing, closed fast from the outside and, although attempting to lug in, he was up for the place by a neck over John L. Mc-Knights aging Agrarian-U. The heavily-backed favorite, Carolyn K Stables Gnu, was seventh, ending his perfect local record. Only last week Zeeland made his 1952 debut finishing second to Gnu .at odds of 125 to 1, and probably was the best. He was .given a lot more consideration today, but ► .. still returned-an ample 5.20. Jockey Harrison B. Wilson rode strongly and alertly, and got the gray four-year-old Flushing II. gelding home over the "good" track in 1:12%. A crowd of 18,625 were on hand as the cool and damp weather of the last few days was replaced by ideal conditions. However, the racing strip was still damp underneath, and a strong headwind was blowing down the stretch in the early events. A fashion show was held in the clubhouse between the running of the third and fourth races. A group of lovely young models displayed the new frocks of a leading Philadelphia department store, with Garden State Parks radio director, Ruth Chilton, giving a running commentary. Fernando Fernandez steadied his mount and just waited until the dueling leaders were about through, and then asked for speed from Keystone Stables Our World, and got it. Our World won the six-furlong fifth race in handy manner by a couple of lengths with J. W. Doyles Flying Pat Continued on Page Forty Zeeland Tallies at Camden To End Gnus Win Streak Continued from Page One making up ground to be third over Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Bakers Barbareba, who also came from well back. Victory Stables Bit OWhiz and Savoy Stables Flying Polly, who had heatedly argued over the early lead, both faltered badly. The winning New World colt was third choice and returned .80. Veteran trainer A. "Sarge" Swenke and jockey Charlie Burr teamed up to take the laurels in the second race with R. F. Fried-rich, Jr.s Alfadur, completing a 0.20 Daily Double and returning a straight mu-tuel of .00 as the choice. Alfadur shouldered 120 pounds for his mile and a furlong run, and he easily drew out by two and a half lengths over F. L. Moores King Okapi and E. W. Kings Thiercelin, who were separated by daylight. Rippling Hero, who came in recently from Pimlico, captured the mile and a sixteenth opener under the silks of Hunter Faulconer. Ira Hanford was the pilot and the winnef paid 2.60.
