► i Lincoln Fields Notebook By J. J. MURPHY HAWTHORNE, Cicero, HI., May 22.— A two-year-old filly, the first of the produce of the good race mare, Jacks Jill, is here in charge of trainer Anthony Rupelt. The miss has been named Magdelene F„ and she is by Alsab, which makes her a good prospect in the minds of Chicago racegoers who witnessed Alsab in many trimuphs and saw Jacks Jill win such a race as the Hawthorne Gold Cup. It was back in 1946 that the then four-year-old filly took the Cup at the expense of Spy Song and Jess Higley, who, incidentally, is doing all right in New York, was the winning rider. Magdelene F. is owned by Joe A. Goodwin... Owner Douglas Davis braved exceptionally bad weather conditions to fly over here from Lexington, Ky., today. His private plane was piloted by Johnny Mcintosh. . . Andy Phillips, for over 20 years a valuable and adept racing secretary office employee, is all puffed up over his appearance on the front cover of a nationally known turf magazine in connection with the Kentucky Derby victory of Hill Gail. Andy even took the play away from Ben Jones in the photographers lens... Love of man for beast has seldom been more clearly demonstrated than when Frank Butzow, the the Lincoln Fields tub thumper, flew to Champaign, HI., to be at the kennel-side of his dog, who had swallowed a needle . . . Trainer Milt Resseguet reports Oh Leo to be in good shape, but is complaining he cannot match him with the conditions. The colt was recently scratched because of a muddy track. Silent Dave Hum expressed himself as being particularly pleased with the effort of Red Charger here Wednesday and looks for the colt to give a good account of himself in the Peabody. Red Charger ran like a good one in this area last year, and while he was no ball of fire at Santa Anita, he did fairly well in a strange environment. Perhaps the Chicago climate is what he needs... Apprentice Earl Van Hook will lose that five-pound allowance tomorrow. He was one of the leading riders at New Orleans during the past winter and is still under contract to J. D. Mikel, who started him out. . .Trainer Harold White brought in 16 head, property of Shady Brook Farm, from Louisville. . Felix Rando has purchased Brassfield from W. H. Biskey . . . Trainer Larry Thompson flew to his Kansas City, Kan., home to celebrate his birthday. . .Trainer Edward Melanson is in from Pimlico with four head . .Tracy Bougon, whose horses are here in charge of F. P. Aime, is visiting from New Orleans. Harold Bookmans improved runner, Mail From Home, is expected to be a starter in the Fleming Memorial, and will be ridden by jockey Anthony Ferraiuolo and we wish Anthony would shorten his surname . . .Mr. and Mrs. August B. Karle, in from their Crawfordville, HI., home for a brief visit. . .Jockey Larry Barney, who is hitting the comeback trail, departed for Fair-mount Park. . .Among the other riders at Fairmount will be Leon Grandsart, who led the jockeys there last season and who has been one of our favorites. . .Trainer A. Graffagnini engineered a trade whereby Some Town went to owner T. Bougon for Sinkiang. "Graffy" alsa peddled Can Locate to Marion VanBerg ..Joe Hawkins, an owner, is in from Louisville. Andy B. W., good short distance horse here last year, will try the Fleming and will be ridden by Doug Dodson. Dodson is entitled to a bow for riding four winners here Wednesday. Doug is one of the boys from "over ome," having been raised in Calgary, Canada. John Longden, although born in England, was raised in the same town. And Calgary is also the home of a fine newspaper headed by a fine man, Max Bell, who is very much interested in the turf . Johnn W. Kane, who is one of the big shots at Sunshine Park in Florida, is here attending an insurance mans convention Benny Creech is in with 19 head from Louisville. Trainer J. Jensen has arrived with 20 head for owner Sam Wilson, whose Gushing Oil could not quite make it in the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness. Gushing Oil was flown here from Maryland following his engagement in the latter race . MikeZeller got in from Toledo where he served as an official. He will soon depart for Waterford Park. Mike, a hero of World War H., re- Continued on Page Nine r ■ — Lincoln Fields Notebook i By J. J. MURPHY | Continued from Page Three * ceived his preliminary education in the secretarys office under Jimmy Kilroe at Arlington and Washington Park last season . . .Carl Blair, who was responsible for the development of jockey Leon Grahdsart, has shipped a number of horses to Fairmount Park. .-.Jockey Herb Lindberg, who will ride in the Queens Plate at Woodbine Park. Ferrara recently got in with Carmargo Bill, Gee-Light, Retainer, Not the End, and Crossbow Girl. . .Trainer Milton Kite is here froir Miami with three head "for George G Schreiber. Lets have some dope on Johnny Adams, whose riding hereabouts has been sensational. Born in 1915 at Iola, Kansas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Adams, he is one of 12 children, nine of whom are still living:. Five boys and three girls. Is only member of his family under five foot, eight. Father and a couple of brothers are 200 pounders. Parents still living in home purchased for them by John at Yates City, Kas. Father is 77-years-old. John has 17-year-old son, John Jr., attending school in Kansas. Youngster worked for trainer Jack Hodgins, of Dixiana, last summer, and is looking forward to doing it again. John rode his first winner at Kansas City in 1935. Rode about 100 winners in the "bushes" before appearing on a recognized track. And then refused the apprentice allowance. Is one of the few jockeys living who never enjoyed the five-pound allowance. Has steered about 2,500 winners. Was Americas leading rider in 1937, 1942, and 1943. Rode sir winners in seven mounts at Bay Meadows in 1938.
