Best Doings Vies With Ticker Tape Seeking Lincolns Espino Gold Purse Grace Mare Has Won Twice At Meeting; Avon Lady Also After Third Tally in Row HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., May 22.— Heavy rains that visited this course in the morning transformed the racing strip into a river of slop, forced numerous horsemen, in particular, and racing secretary and handicapper Lawrence C. Bogenschutz, in general, to change their plans. Consequently, most of the better races originally programmed failed to fill, with horses of lesser quality monopolizing the spotlight. In spite of the condition of the footing, however, the races were filled and, for the most part, are evenly matched. Headlining the program will be the Espino Gold Purse, 1 named in honor of a thoroughbred who raced on the Illinois circuit with a degree of distinction for many years. As a matter of fact, this same Espino Gold often served in the stud while he was in training on the Chicago backstretches. A band of seven has responded to Bogenschutz call for this mile and one-sixteenth affray, which is fashioned for platers of the ,000 — ,000 variety. Listed are H. Rossets Harbil, J. H. Graces Ticker Tape, Bernard W. Lahdys Best Doings, William H. Bishops Avon Lady, Pollack and Fried-bergs Miss Canasta, S. A. Alexanders Rocky Sir, and Argonne Stables King Diver. Best Doings, one of the many bargains claimed by trainer Elmer Kalensky for his patron, B. W. Landy, of Chicago, probably will be among the choices. The six-year-old son of Best Seller — Big Doings was haltered during the Hot Springs meeting for ,000 and was recently held his own against the best. Best Doings Raced Recently Best- Doings seemed a trifle "ouchy" in pulling up the other day, but trainer Kalensky reports he is sound. The stallion, however, will be running right back real soon. He was recently beaten by Happy East and Boo Boo Shoo. He appeared to have dead aim on victory at the head of * the stretch, but tired. Ticker Tape comes off a splendid victory on Monday, when she led virtually every inch of the way to beat Genial Jack.. . Haberdashery, Born to Win, Worthy Option, Tartar II., Dominion and Big Inch. She also captured her only other race here. The mares forte is early speed, with which sha often runs all competition into ground, then manages to hang on to get the important money. Hafbii, under the direction of S. Bryant Ott, has been given a short Kentucky campaign, after having been on the sidelines throughout the winter. The gelding is dropping down somewhat in class. Last season he competed against some of the very best horses in the Chicago area. His mud-running qualities, however, leave some room for doubt. Avon Lady is one of the most consistent ■campaigners in the Bishop barn, and is particularly partial to soft going. She has won her last two races, one coming here and the other across the way at Sportsmans Park. She is the type of filly who usually lags well in back of the pace, then comes on in the last quarter of a mile. Rocky Sir, a very capable mud runner, hardly showed to his best advantage on the opening day of the meeting when he finished well in back of Ticker Tape. Miss Canasta was once regarded as a young stakes mare, but has been relegated to the claiming ladder. She won her most recent start at Churchill Downs in workmanlike fashion.
