4 III I i To Market Victor In Massachusetts Silas Mason Homebred Sets Track Mark of 2:01% and Easily Defeats Tio Ciro By FRED GALIANI Staff Correspondent SUFFOLK DOWNS, East Boston, Mass., June 11. — Breaking track records at almost every pole, Silas Mason II.s To Market emulated his daddy, Market Wise, with an easy victory in the famed Massachusetts Handicap here today. Taking the lead early on the backstretch, the strapping chestnut colt widened out on his field to leave them far behind and coast on in 2:01% for the mile and a quarter to win by two and one-half lengths. Second at the finish was Cherry-Oca Stables Tio Ciro, who was two more lengths before the favored One Hitter with Hampton Stables Alerted fourth in the field of 10 horses. The track was tagged as good for all the previous races and fast for the Massachusetts, but it certainly was a couple of fractions off its best. Boland Winning Rider With jockey Willie Boland coming up from New York especially for the race, To Market reeled off fractions of 1:09% for the six furlongs, 1:35 for the mile and 1:47% and 2:01% to return 4 to his supporters in the crowd of 21,102. The Weather was in a changeable mood, with rain falling at intervals during the afternoon although the sun was out for the New England classic. One Hitter seemed to dislike the track somewhat and it had been stated the horse would not run if the track was "off." Eddie Legere, who saddled the horse in the absence of Max Hirsch, was in the winners circle to accept the huge trophy symbolic of victory in the race from judge John C. Pappas, president of Suffolk Downs, while the horse was draped in a floral horseshoe in the blue and gold colors of the track. Probably the happiest man in the circle Continued on Page Three MAX HIRSCH— Sent out To Market to score a record-breaking victory in yesterdays renewal of the Massachusetts Handicap. ♦ ; ; , L ■ j , ] , . j J ] 1 J 1 i — — To Market Victor In Massachusetts Silas Mason Homebred Sets Track Mark of 2:01 Vs and Easily Defeats Tio Ciro Continued from Page One was William Ball, groom of To Market, who has taken care of the colt since he was a yearling, who was bred by his owner. To Market earned 2,600, some ,000 less than Market Wise did back in 1942. This was the third victory of the year for To Market in eight starts. Winner of the Arlington Futurity at two, but somewhat of a disappointment as a sophomore To Market scored in the San Carlos Handicap on the coast and was a good fourth in the Maturity. He started in two handicaps at Belmont before shipping to the Downs but was a running horse today. He had a pull in the weights, getting at 110, one of which was overweight, to One Hitter and Mamelukes 116, the starting co-topweights. Mameluke finished fifth in the race after being far back in the early part. Outrun to First Turn To Market broke from the outside of the gate at the start of the Massachusetts and was outrun to the first turn by Little Step, with Simms, One Hitter, Alerted, Tio Ciro, Chat Noir II., Mameluke, Abstract, and Sun Bahrain following in that order. They remained that way around the turn, but when they straightened out on the backstretch, Boland sent To Market past Little Step like a shot. One Hitter was third as Alerted moved up to him, with Tio Ciro. Mameluke and Abstract close be- hind. To Market lengthened out on his field, three, four to seven lengths as they sped to the far turn. Alerted was sent up to make his bid, with One Hitter following close behind and Mameluke moving up from the ruck along with Tio Ciro. Rounding the turn To Mar- ket was still far in front and running with ease, while Alerted, Tio Ciro and One Hitter all came around the bend in a -fruit- less challenge. Alerted weakened somewhat in his chase and Tio Ciro, down on the rail, closed in the fastest of the pursuers. But To Market was home free and won with more authority than the margin would in- dicate. One Hitter headed Alerted for the third money in the race. Tio Ciro was also in light with 105 pounds.
