Volcanic Expected To Start Saturday Walmac Campaigner Likely To Head Lincoln Handicap Field; List Other Prospects j HAWTHORNE, Cicero, 111., June 11.— It appeared likely today that Walmac Farms I Volcanic would be a starter in the mile and a quarter Lincoln Handicap Saturday when the Lincoln Fields Association rings down the curtain on its highly successful meeting here at Hawthorne. The big seven-year-old stallion has yet to appear under silks this year, -but his recent training moves indicate that he is ready to make his seasonal bow. In horsemens language, "he looks good and acts good." , Winner of the Hawthorne Gold Cup as a four-year-old in 1949, the stalwart son of Ambrose Light — Hot Supper, by Gallant Fox, probably will meet another Hawthorne Gold Cup winner in the 0,000 week-end ! feature. Seaward, who won that stake last year, is one of three Hasty House Farm nominees for the Lincoln Handicap, the others being Ruhe, winner of the Narcissus Handicap on May 31. and Inseparable, victor in the Sweeping Light Purse y ester- i day. Seaward and Inseparable are seven years old, same age as Volcanic, while Ruhe is , a four-year-old gelding. From the same crop as another prominent Lincoln Handi- • cap candidate, Reuben Kowalls Pur Sang, winner of the 1951 Peabody Memorial in which he conquered Royal Mustang and Ruhe. Volcanic had the misfortune, if such it can be called, to come out the same year as his own stablemate, the fleet and photogenic Billings, and Calumet Farms great champion, Citation. But Volcanic developed into one of the best handicap horses of his generation and was, himself, a champion on the grass course and an accomplished runner on the flat. In their three-year-old season Volcanic finished third to | Citation and the latter "s running mate, Free America, in the American Derby, while Billings was on the shelf temporarily. Volcanic made a strong run at the Calumet pair in the stretch drive. Set American Mile Record on Grass The following year, Volcanic was unbeatable during the Hawthorne meeting, where, among other accomplishments, he established the present American record for one mile on a grass course, 1:35%. He more than emulated the achievements of j Billings the year before, because he won ■ the Charles W. Bidwill Handicap in which the topweighted, Billings was defeated by Oration, who had an advantage of 27 pounds in the weights. Billings was gen- i erally conceded to have been second to Citation only among three -year -olds that year, 1948. There is still another Hawthorne Gold Cup winner among the Lincoln Handicap nominees. This is M. A. and Roy Saf firs Dr. Ole Nelson, a former stablemate of • Volcanic, who took Hawthornes big event in 1950, hanging up the present mile and a quarter track record, 2:01%, in doing so. But Dr. Ole Nelson suffered a minor foot injury recently which caused some interruption in his training for the Lincoln Handicap. The injury is nothing serious, but it resulted in making him a doubtful starter Saturday. Besides Pur Sang, Volcanic and the Hasty House trio, the field for the Lincoln Handicap will be drawn from among the following: N. G. Bouchards Can Locate and Fair Appraisal, Mikel Farms False, Mrs. Herbert Herffs Screeming Jack, B. W. Landys Plunger, E. C. Roths Chall-cote, Sam E. Wilson, Jr.s Air Mail, G. R: Wynhoff s Able Sirte, and Mrs. G. C. White and E. W. Thomas good mare, Our Request.
