Seven Three-Year-Olds Seek Wolverine Purse Lonoke Flash and Ever Bright Entry Favored at Detroit Oval By DON FAIR Staff Correspondent DETROIT, Mich., June 11.— Henry Forrest, Covington, Ky., turfman will saddle a strong entry here tomorrow for the six-furlong Wolverine Purse in his own Lonoke Flash, 117 pounds, and Ever Bright, a member of the Pollard and Harkins establishment, pegged at 119 pounds. Forrest, presently the nations leading trainer, also has entrants in several of the supporting events, holding a royal chance to increase his advantage in the national standings. Lonoke Flash and Ever Bright, however, will have their work cut out for them inasmuch as the remaining five probable starters have shown considerable class and rate with the best three-year-olds quartered at the Detroit race course. Named to oppose the Forrest -trained duo are Schwartz and Wagners Heres Luck, 109, Marion H. VanBergs McGrathiana, T19; James Paddocks homebred colt, First Heir, 119; Grace Kosiba Stables Abisok, 114, and Mrs. Howard G. Underwoods Brown Rambler, 119 pounds. Before shipment here, Lonoke Flash defeated such rivals as the stakes-winner, Free for Me, Our Challenge, and Rock Garden, among others, at Oaklawn Park and also established a new five and one -half furlongs track record of 1:04 at the Hot Springs oval in the Fleet Handicap. His latter conquest was over such shifty three -year-olds as Dry Summer, Nobility, Red Curtice and Star Wish, his margin being four and one-half lengths at the wire over his closest competitor. Lonoke Flash shouldered 116 pounds in his Fleet Handicap victory. Ever Bright, handsome daughter of Sun Again and Still Blue, by Blue Larkspur, was baten in her last engagement at Churchill Downs, but she has worked smartly since arrival at the local oval. During her juvenile campaign, the Pollard and Harkins miss won eight of 13 outings, picking up earnings of over 2,000. She was good enough to annex the 1951 editions of Narragansetts Jeanne dArc Stakes and she also whipped a clever band of youngsters in the James H. Connors Memorial Stakes at the New England track. Brown Rambler is one of the most improved members of the three-year-old division. Successful in six of his dozen engagements ! this year, the Underwood colt is a double winner at the current meeting, scoring in the six -furlong Willow Run Purse ; and a division of the Ferndale Purse at a similar distance. Heres Luck is favorably weighted with the apprentice allowance claimed and she may take some beating in the Wolverine. Heres Luck won her last two starts at Pim-lico. She also chalked up two other victories during her Florida campaign this year. Apprentice Blake Collins will be at the reins. The locally-owned Abisok shipped to the Detroit race course with a good record and he will make his local bow in the Wolverine. The High Breeze — Whisk Dolly colt beat a quick field at seven furlongs in Chicago, May 2 and he also won at Sunshine Park before his trek north. McGrathiana, recently beaten off in the six and one-half furlongs Ky. Colonel Purse at Hawthorne, was a four-time winner last year, but could do no better than second to Eljay in four outings thus far in 1952, although he has been meeting classy company. Weather predictions for the Motor City area are favorable and the Wolverine Purse and its excellent supporting races prob- ably will be decided over a lightning fast track. Attendance and mutuel figures continue to swing upward at the Detroit race course and another big crowd is expected tomorrow. •
