The Phillies, hampered by injuries to two regulars, third baseman Willie Jones and first baseman Eddie Waitkus, could have won, but for Browns sixth inning base running blunder which cost Curt Simmons his third straight success over the Cubs this year. With the score tied at 1 to 1, the Phils had filled the bases on Jack Mayos single, Jack Lohrkes ground out, a single by Connie Ryan, and a walk to Brown. Then Simmons struck out and centerfielder Richie Ashburn came to bat. Ashburn worked the count to two and two and lined a single into centerf ield to drive both Mayo and Ryan across the plate and send Brown to third. But centerfielder Hal Jeff coat threw the ball to third baseman Bill Serena and then second baseman Eddie Miksis called for it and touched second base. Umpire Al Barlick ruled that Brown failed to touch the base and that he was forced out, cancelling the two runs and robbing Ashburn of a hit. Jones and Roberts Chased Both Jones and pitcher Robin Roberts were thrown out by Barlick in the next inning for riding him from the bench on the decision. Sauer belted his second home run of the game and his 17th of the season into the left field bleachers in the Cubs sixth to furnish the winning margin for pitcher Omar "Turk" Lown. It was Lowns third win against two losses. Lown was relieved by Dutch Leonard with one out in the ninth after Bill Nicholson walked and Gran Hamner sent him to third with a double. Leonard struck out Johnny Wyrostek. Smokey Burgess sent a ground ball which Dee Fondy bobbled for an error to allow Ralph Caballero, who ran for Nicholson, to score but Fondy threw to Johnny Pramesa to catch Hamner at home and end the game. Sauers first four -bagger came in the second inning and cleared" the fence into Waveland Avenue while his third blast, in the eighth inning, also went into the bleachers.
