Portland Meadows Offers Powder Puff Derby June 29 -PORTLAND MEADOWS, Portland, Ore., June 27. The Powder Puff Derby, annually one of the highlights of the Portland Meadows season, will have its fourth running Wednesday, June 29. The Oregon Racing Commission has granted permission for the race, which will match girl riders under the same rules as prevail for licensed jockeys. Mrs. Delores Thomas, winner of last r years running of , the classic event, will try for her second straight victory and must be at her best form to gain the nod over Irene Zollinger, who was winner of both the 1952 and 1953 races. The 1954 event saw three sisters the Johnson girls, Mrs. Delores Thomas, Mrs. Gwen Baze and Mrs. Eleanore Dean, finishing in that order. The Powder Puff Derby will be carded as a regular race, and pari-mutuel wagering will be conducted as on any other race on the program.
