Eight-Horse Field In Detroit Sprint VanBergs Chic Waye and Greater Loom Favorites in Oak Park Optimists Purse DETROIT RACE COURSE, Livonia, Mich., June 27: The Oak Park Optimists, a six-furlong claiming event for four -year-olds and older, is the best offering on the mediocre program scheduled for presentation here Tuesday. Eight of the better-grade platers from the local thoroughbred colony, representing six interests, will meet in the top attraction. The Marion H. VanBerg entry of Greater and Chic Wa ve, probably will answer "boots and saddles" favored for the dash. Both the Nebraska-owned racers have campaigned rather well at the Detroit meeting. Trainer VanBerg, who took a good lead over his fellow turfmen with three winners Saturday afternoon, announced this morning that jockey Lois Cook, top reinsman at the current session, will have the mount on one of his charges in the Oak Park Optimists. William Zakoor, tied with Bryan Wise for third place in the local conditioning standings, also will send out a duo. Zakoor will saddle Tarom, a member of the Helen Recovitis stable, and Second Barrel, who races under Mrs. Zakoors silks. Both the Zakoor-trained entrants will shoulder 116 pounds and no rider had been named for them at a late hour today. Others Expected to Start Others expected to start are William E. Schmidts Tiffany, Robert Needhams Mark Klaine, the C. and P. Farms Misty Style, and H. Lucas Vicki Diana. Tiffany has been showing decided improvement in recent engagements while Misty Style is always dangerous when dropped in with the class competition she will meet in the Tuesday feature. Jockey Sherman Armstrong, Who returned from ThistleDown after handling Trim Destiny in the Ohio Derby, will be at the reins on Vicki Diana; Robert Lee Baird is engaged for Tiffany and apprentice Albert Blache will have the mount on Vicki Diana. In the meantime at the Detroit Race Course interest is centering on the 0,000 Governors Handicap, a six furlongs stake for three-year-olds and older, which will be renewed here Independence Day. The Governors will serve as an important prep event for the July 9 running of the 0,000 Michigan Mile and a crack field is expected to contest the holiday sprint. Present indications are that at least 10 of the classier performers will meet in the Governors. Word was received from Ohi-cago that 1954 Mile victor, Spur On, will take advantage of the preparatory stake. T. D. Buhls Jilted Gob and Second Avenue, 1953 Mile star, will be under silks, in the holiday headliner while Mrs. George C. Whites Trip Lightly, Cols Daughter, and Princess Trace, VanBerg Stables Knights Reward, First Refusal, and Foxie Jeanie, Devereux Stables Greatest, and, possibly T. Alie Grissoms By Far are other probable Governors starters.
