BIGGER N BETTER gradually worked his way forward and closed fast, but could not overtake the winner. SAMOAN settled into the stretch with a short lead but gave way when challenged by the winner. CHARLIES JOY saved ground, but could not reach the Readers. CHEROKEE CHIEF and AGAMEMNON lacked early foot. DEAD INDIAN raced wide. INDISPUTABLE had early speed, but failed to stay. RESACA raced nearest MIRROR from the start, disposed of the latter inside the last eighth and then held SANTORIN safe. The latter raced evenly for a half mile drifted out during the stretch run and could not overtake the winner. MIRROR made the pace until challenged by RESACA and then faltered BERELIA was unable to threaten the top ones when set down in the drive. SAPPHIRE BLUE lacked early foot. BOUNCE-A-BIT was never dangerous. DIANES REQUEST raced wide. KHALETTE could not keep up. ROYAL CLIPPER took command from SHIELD BEARER approaching the final turn and after clearing the final hedge, won without need of urging. AIR DELIGHT fenced willingly throuqhout and finished well but was not good enough for the winner. SHIELD BEARER bobbled at the eighth brush and after swerving during the flat run, failed to reach the leaders. TEARMUNN went to the front at the second hedge and held on well to the fifth, then gave way. BRENDAN could not keep up. GOLF ACE tired., WINGING STAR pecked at several jumps and could not enter serious contention. CORNHILL, NAUTILUS and LOVELARK II. showed nothing. B0MARSUND was through early and pulled up lame. DIRECT WAY went to the front at once and, after settling into the stretch with a good lead, was ridden out to retain a safe margin. STEPHENS ROYAL, away slowly, gradually worked his way forward and finished strongly but could not get to the winner. PALMY DAYS, prominent until inside the stretch, tired. DEER CROSSING had no mishap. NAVAL HERO could not keep up. COUNT AMBER began sluggishly and sulked. PERSIAN SPY had early speed but failed to stay. J. HOMER and POUKET were never serious contenders. The latter drifted out entering the stretch c and, closing fast in the middle of the track under brisk urging, finished on equal terms with SUTLER. PHANTOM m GUN, rank during the post parade and at the starting gate, began fast and made the pace until inside the J/J stretch but faltered and could not withstand the top pair. WORLD RULER had no mishap. OH ROMEO, prominent until inside the stretch, tired. ASTROLOGY raced evenly without mishap. HOE DOWN raced greenly. ROLLING CLOUDS was never dangerous. NATALIE, outrun to the stretch, finished strongly but could not get to the winner. LAWDY CLAUDY had no mishap and probably needed her race. RULING BEAUTY failed to respond for the drive. MISS DESIRABLE, rank at the post, galloped off a slow furlong before the start, raced with CASHEL II. to the stretch but had nothing left. LOYAL LADY II. and WINDOW FAN were never prominent. WARHEAD lacked early foot but moved between horses entering the stretch and closed strongly. VISCOUNT, in close quarters on the final turn, finished willingly when clear. BUMPY ROAD held on well to the stretch and then weakened. KENTUCKY PRIDE had early speed but failed to stay. ISENDU and ITOBE, forced wide on the stretch turn, failed to rally when straightened for the drive. YEMEN tired. JIMMER, forwardly placed to the stretchy had nothing left. NANS MINK began poorly. DERRICK moved up boldly approaching the stretch and finished well but was not good enough for the winner. HOIST AWAY went to the front after five-eighths but tired and .drifted out during the stretch run. THE IRISHMAN bore out entering the stretch. THAT LUCKY DAY set the pace until challenged by HOIST AWAY and then gave way. AUDIENCE tired during the drive. PRINCES GEM and MOONY were unable to enter serious contention.
