Ole FolsWins Debonair With Display of Speed Favorite Whips Friar Roach at Hollywood Before 41,797 Patrons By Staff Correspondent HOLLYWOOD PARK, Inglewood, Calif., May 11. — Neil S. McCarthys Ole Fols, conqueror of Tomy Lee last winter in a sprint stakes at Santa Anita, proved a speedy and punctual favorite here Saturday in the 8,000, 6-furlong Debonair Stakes as he withstood a strong stretch challenge from Helbush Farms Friar Roach to win by a half length in 1:09%. Howard Keeks fast-closing Bagdad was another three and three-quarters lengths away third. Before a throng of 41,797, Ole Fols, an imported son of Tudor Minstrel — as is Tomy Lee — had to prove his superiority the hard way. At the start, the usually fast-breaking colt had the ground break from under him and his nose nearly touched the ground before jockey Johnny Longden could straighten him up and get him into stride. Once righted Ole Fols quickly rushed into second place behind the swift-starting Djebah, who was clocked the first quarter in : 22 Vs. Moving through on the inside, Ole Fols took command shortly after the initial quarter and widened his lead to three lengths as the field pounded into the stretch. Through the home lane, Longden had to keep the winner about his business as he began to weaken from his early efforts, but Friar Roachs determined charge fell short. Bagdad closed well after breaking alertly and then dropping back. It was the Double Jay colts first start since late last fall. Civic Pride took down fourth money as Fred W. Hoopers Pryson finished fifth. The first two finishers share the Santa Anita 6-furlong track record of 1 : 084,with the older Fleet Nasrullah. As the public choice, Ole Fols, who was completing a triple for "Grandpa" Longden, paid .70, .60 and .80.;Ole Folsl winning time was 1:09%, three-fifths slower than the Hyperion colt Gainsworth took in winning the third.
