Tight Nit Overwhelms Tanforan Two-Year-Olds Front-Running Winner in San Bruno; Favored Counterate 2nd TANFORAN, San Bruno, Calif., May 11. — Donald Brokaws Tight Nit, a daughter of Victory Tower and Opal Jack, demonstrated her mastery over the best two-year-olds to show here this spring when he was a front-running winner of the 6,825 San Bruno Stakes at five furlongs here Saturday. She ran the distance, which marked her second win in as many starts, in :59Vs under the guidance of Richard Griffiths and won by a length and a half as the more "favored Counterate finished second. Orbits Top was third and Inimitable fourth, while eight other juveniles, all masculine, finished in their wake. As second choice of the crowd of 16,292, the Brokaw filly paid .60 for .00, while her net share of the purse was ,200. A few strides out of the gate, Tight Nit took a lead which she never gave up. Entering the homestretch, she widened on her field and with only a furlong to go she was in command by four lengths. From that point on, she had no difficulty holding her rivals safe. Counterate had" some trouble or else he might have been closer. In the first place, he stumbled leaving the start and then, his rider reported, was sharply blocked. Once he got into the clear, however, he closed boldly and while he was unable to overtake the winner, he was much the best of the others. He took second honors, four lengths in advance of Orbits Top, who, in turn, beat Inimitable a length for third. Orbits Top also closed a lot of ground to account for his share of the purse, while Inimitable was among the leaders from the start. Rob Bob and Jimbo Rose were closest to the winner to the final quarter, but then both had enough and were soundly beaten by the time they reached the end of the five panels. Others who participated in the San Bruno were Forward Gunner, Happy Harry F, Joe Dent, Imbert, Star Diamond and Golden Scorpion. Tight Nit now is heading for Hollywood Park, where a number of lucrative opportunities await her.
