Ky., April ! .— Champ De Mars, J. O. and G. H. Keenes son of War Star— Yellow Blossom, their star Derby prospect, was asked to go the farthest that any of the Derby candidates at the local tracks have been worked thus far this year. Accompanied by Mike McPuke, another Derby candidate from the same stable, he-negotiated a mile over a track that was deep in soft mud. Champ De Mars led his stable companion for the entire distance and was going handily all the way. The fractional time for the mile was :2?,. :57, 1 :262j. I:S4%. Both colts were well under restraint all of the journey and could have gone faster had trainer A. D. Steele wished it. The best work of the morning of any horse eligible for the Derby was that of Kohn and Theisens Recollection, which covered three-quarters in 1:18. Barnsdale II. joined Recollection after he had covered the first quarter in :2."» and they were together to the half mile post in :.r 0"T. and on out to the three-quarters. Recollection shows steady improvement in each succeeding gallop and is shaping up nicely for some fast work when weather and track conditions permit. Ron Johnson galloped Eric, W. H. White-houses Derby colt, three-quarters in 1 :25%. The stable of H. Teller Archibald is suffering from an attack of the flu, but Dr. Henry Hart Hill reports the horses improving. John S. Middleton. trainer of the Frederick Johnson horses, was a visitor at the Downs this morning. He reports the horses at LeX-ington as being well advanced in their training as they have been going steadily in their work on the sand track at the Kentucky Association course even in the worst weather. He has taken up Bumpkin, one of the Derby candidates, for his employer, but the colt has not had much work since he arrived from the farm where he was turned out during the winter months. Kdward Cebrians mare Scramble foaled a chestnut colt by Omar Khayyam at the farm of J. S. Barbee about two weeks ago. which is the picture of his sire. Mali Jong, another Cebrian mare, foaled a bay colt by Chatter-ton about the same time. She is to be sent to Playfellow, the brother of Man o War, this season. Mr. Cebrian received a handsome offer from A. B. Hancock for the Omar Khayyam colt and his dam, but the offer was turned down by the California turfman. The stables of Jim Ownbey. and R. Fitzger-ald, Joe Dreyer and I. Frank Croissant are due in today from Tampa. Word was received that the Fair Grounds track at New Orleans would be closed to horsemen Monday and all horses are expected to be moved by that time from the track. Rob Powers reached here from New Orleans last night and reports the Jefferson Park course under water again from another hard rainstorm.
