FORECASTER VICTOR * Gallops Off With Chief Offering at Bowie Course. ♦ Buttercup Outlasts Hobsou and Cooncan in Closest Finish of the Day. s • BOWIE, Md.. April !».— T. W. OBriens Forecaster was winner of the Bowie feature this afternoon when he galloped off with the N. V. A. Handieap over a mile and a sixteenth. The race was named in honor of the National Vaudeville Artists and it was a handicap for horses which had started in claiming or selling races in 1925 or 1926. This was an idea of Walter S. Vosburgh, of one means to take care of platers without subjecting them to a claim. The day was bright and the track had dried out considerably, although still slow. Kxcellent sport resulted from the program, which opened with a two-year-old dash, in which Florian and Golden Pennant, b th carrying the H. 1*. Whitney silks, were first and second. Forecaster was one of the easy winners of the day and at the end of the race he was five lengths before as good a mare as F. A. Tansors Golden Billows, while John Farrell Jr.s Dr. OMara outstayed H. G. Bedwells Prince Hamlet for third money. There was little to the race. W. Harvey rushed Forecaster away .with such speed In-had a long lead before the back stretch was reached. Tammaro had Golden, Billows under restraint and, while Feysun was leading her. it was apparent she could go into second place at the first asking. SCORES BY FIVF LENGTHS. Reaving the back stretch Tammaro took the mare into second place, but Forecaster was half a dozen lengths clear and Harvey had him under restraint. He simply cantered the remainder of the way and at the end was still five lengths before the mare. Golden Billows in turn beat Dr. OMara two lengths and the Farrell horse was three lengths before Prince , Hamlet, which ha J. shown a bit more speed than in his recent effort. One of the most sensational finishes of the day came at the end of the fourth, a si* and a half furlongs race for platers. At the finish there were three so closely lapped it was with difficulty they were separated. A. Schiros Buttercup was the winner, with W. C. Trovers Hobson second and Charles Turners Cooncan third. To be the winner Buttercup had to close an immense gap. In the run through the back stretch she was far out of it and wai forced to work her way up on the outside of her opponents. Cave Woman set the pace, with Hobson and Lieutenant Farrell not far Pack. They kept this order into the stretch and swinging for home Buttercup was still so far back that her chances appeared hopeless, but O. Biwn was riding with hand and heel and the filly responded gamely. Stride by stride-she gained on the others and, while Cave Woman and Lieutenant Farrell dropped back Hobson stuck to his task and Cooncan tried to keep step with Buttercup in her winning rush. Thus it was that the finish was close-, the three sweeping over the line like a team. WHITNEY COLORS TO FORE. H. P. Whitneys silks were again first and second in a two-year-old dash when Pierian led Golden Pennant to the finish with R. Putters MeDonough saving third from A. J. Cadeks Master William by a length. Florian was on his bad behavior at the l ost. but the start was a good one. though he was last off in his outside post position. Robby Jones had left the post running, and Robinson made every use of that advantage by rushing him along. MoPonough was after him. but McAtee sent Florian along on the outside to such good advantage that he-soon was in third place. Golden Pennant, his stable-mate, was not far away, but Master William met with some interfe-rence and. leaving the back stretch, he was* last of the company. In the stretch, Bobby Jones tired rather badly, but MeDonough hung on so well that McAtee had to ride Florian vigorously to make the -.eotei certain. Then Golden Iennant was along to beat McDonough by a head. Master William closed an immense gap and was racing over his opponents at the end. to finish fourth right at the heels of Mc-Donougn. Ordinary three-year-old maidens made up the field in the second race and it brought about a great finish when M. J. Yemens /.e-od was winner with F. M. Kellys Senate only beating J. F. Richardsons Duhric by a head for second place. It was a good atari and Senate- was first to be under way. Ralls sent him along at a clip that saw him four lengths clear in the-first eighth, while Zeod and Dignify close I lapped headed the others. Dubric as usual was slow to be under way and Reach did lOeaUanei cm tlxteeatt pep*] FORECASTER VICTOR Continued from first page not help his chances materially when he was driving him furiously without permitting him to settle into a racing stride. Senate began to tire before the stretch was reached and then it was Dignify that showed her head in front, but she did not last long there and Zeod took up the running an eighth out where he was well clear of the others and Senate was hanging on with better courage than the filly. In the meantime Du-bric. in spite of Beach, had worked his way up on the outside and though he lost ground by going wide in the stretch he was racing over his rivals at the end to be beaten only by a margin of two heads. Something of a sensation came out of the running of the six and a half furlongs of the third race when James McCanns French Lndy nosed out the Flamingo Farm Stables Poor Sport and W. Constantines Camouflage. And a goodly part of the surprise was the dull race run by W. S. Murrays Jacques, a recent winner of the meeting. Oblique was the one to cut out the early running, but Camouflage was not far back of him and before the run through the back stretch was completed the Constantine gelding had moved to the front. Ttah was racing forwardly and both Poor Sport and Bodanzky were going well, while French Lady was rather slow to settle into her racing strides. .Munden wisely had her racing smoothly before he asked her to improve her gait. Camouflage looked all over a winner swinging into the stretch, but there Poor Sport charged up on the inside and he had the old fellow exceedingly busy when Munden came up on the outside with French Lady. She closed with a great burst of speeil and was only winner in the last nod, while Poor Sport beat the tiring Camouflage a half length for the place .with Bodanzky fourth and live lengths further away. W. Munden, the riding sensation of the Tijuana meting, rode his second winner of the day when he brought J. J. Corcorans Tribune home the winner of the mile and a sixteenth sixth race. Like French I ady, his other winner, Tribune was not considered as having much chance. To win he easily beat W. .1. Kramers Fornovo with I. W. I,ees Sandpile third. Tribune was away fast and racing Condolier into defeat, also outran Jimmy Brown, another to show early speed. In the back stretch Fornovo moved into second place and in the run home he cut down the lead of Tribune, but he never seriously threatened the victor.
