THE HEATHEN BY NOSE Accounts for Spring Juvenile in Sparkling Finish Beats Favorite Casting in Final FinalStride Stride Emerson Steeplechase SteeplechaseEasy Easy for Bridge PIMLICO Md May 12 The Spring Juve ¬ nile Stakes a dash of four and a half fur ¬ longs for twoyearolds was the feature of the Maryland Jockey Club program today It brought a field of seven youngsters to the post and furnished a stirring contest in which The Heathen was the victor by a nose over the favorite Casting Callahan had the mount on The Heathen and when the barrier was released was off in front and remained there throughout the race In the early stages Jim Crow and Foregone furnished much opposi ¬ tion and rounding the far turn where they dropped back Johnson brought Peter Fiz up with a rush and for a time it looked as if the latter would go to the front but when shaken up a bit The Heathen again drew away and had a onelength lead entering the home stretch In the final eighth the pacemakers early efforts began to tell on him and he tired At the finish Callahan was forced to drive hard to get The Heathen home in front Casting ran a remarkable race Beginning very slowly on the outside he dropped back in the early stages until he was almost last making the turn out of the back stretch Rounding the far turn he be ¬ gan moving up on the outside and in the stretch was gradually wearing the winner down The four and a half furlongs were run in 54 and the net value of the stake to the winner was 4840 4840RUXS RUXS AWAY FROM RIVALS RIVALSThe The Kmerson Steeplechase the last jump ¬ ing race of the meeting brought a field of maidens to the post Bridge on the strength of a good workout the other day was chosen by the steeplechase fans and went to the post an oddson favorite Bridge was ridden by Neander and simply ran away from his opponents Taking command soon after the start he raced under restraint until the eighth jump where he drew away into a long lead Neander took him in hand again and at the finish he was under stout restraint Dragon de Vertu was second beaten a length He came from a long way back in the early running and easily disposed of the others Ascetic ran like a horse that might improve He is a good jumper and Jones had him tinder a pull the first turn of the field When he tired a bit he was eased up and the race improved rather than hurt him Burton II lost his rider at the tenth jump jumpAll All of the three placed horses in the second race paid handsome dividends Twelve two yearold maiden fillies went to the post in this race and a heavy play developed for Gold Bells and Sapin both of which were in the field They were well backed They had outside post positions and when the start came both left a bit slowly but rounding the far turn Gold Bells moved up fast and for a time looked as if she would go to the front Smallwood took her very wide and this put her out of the struggle The winner was Orange Glow a supposed good thing in some of her races at Miami In todays contest Orange Glow gradually improved her position and in the run through the stretch finished fast She passed the tiring pacemakers in the final eighth and at the end drew away into a four lengths lead High Art was sec ¬ ond and Fallen Leaf third Both Gold Bells and Sapin were eased up in the home stretch stretchAVAR AVAR MAIS BY A HEAD HEADBrice Brice ran a good race in the third but could not quite make it When the start came Brice quickest to get going outran his opponents to the first turn and staying close to the rail for the entire trip made the pace until the last fifty yards where War Man caught and passed him to win by a head War Man made a determined effort to take the lead at the head of the stretch but Callahan had a bit up his sleeve and when he shook Brice up the latter drew away again only to tire in the last sixteenth Dr OMara and Gatewood finished well and in the final drive Gatewood took third money by half a length lengthAnother Another favorite went down to defeat when Fly Man was beaten in the fifth race The winner was Montferrat from the Sagamore Stable This colt was away fastest when the start came and after racing under slight restraint to the turn out of the back stretch drew away into a long lead At the end he was tirin and Coltilletti had to ride him out to stall off Welshot which closed stoutly on the inside First Aid was third and Fly Man fourth The latter was never dangeroti at any stage of the trip tripOnly Only two entries were made in the steeple ¬ chase which was carded for tomorrow and the race was declared off and a three quarter dash substituted
