VICTORY FOR GALAHAD Reuter Racer Defeats Canaan and Jean Valjean T S Jordan Displays Great Speed Clyde Van Dusen Is IsDismal Dismal Failure HOMEWOOD 111 May 28 Galahad over ¬ looked by the spectators sprung a surprise by winning the Union Park Purse feature race at Washington Park this afternoon in handy fashion The race was over one mile and while the winner gave his few backers pome cause for worry in the early stages of the race he had the necessary speed when it counted most and passed all others in the last quarter to win by a half length from Canaan Jean Valjean finished third thirdSix Six horses paraded to the post and every one with the exception of Chicago took a turn at showing the way Jean Valjean was in front in the early stages was replaced by Blessefield on the back stretch and when the latter bore out Reigh Olga assumed a short lead only to be passed by Canaan when the stretch was reached The latter held his advantage to the stretch only to be passed by the fast finishing Galahad near the finish finishCanaan Canaan and the Royal Stable and Grabner entry of Blessefield and Chicago came in for the most play It seemed in the early stages as if they would live up to the calculations of the public as Blessefield was leading and Canaan was close up with Galahad far back But when Blessefield bore out badly and almost touched the outside fence on the first turn chances for the favorites did not look so good and Galahad blasted whatever hope they had by staging his last minute rush rushUNFAVORABLE UNFAVORABLE WEATHER WEATHERThe The afternoon was decidedly unpleasant and the crowd was the smallest of the week A cold wind which blew across the course courseall all afternoon forced most of the patrons to seek the shelter of the various enclosures and those that choce to remain in the open were wererwell rwell wrapped The track was fast and while it was but an ordinary card some good time was made by the horses that competed competedStuyvesant Stuyvesant Peabodys good gelding T S Jordan making his first start of the Chi cago season showed that he retained his form by running six furlongs in 1 11 to win the sixth race from a good band of sprinters The winner was in front most of the way and finished twoJengths before Jack Jackwhich which in turn defeated Morsun one of the favorites Both Morsun and Clyde Van Dusen the thepublic public choices suffered when they were off to a poor start and before they had got fully in their stride half the field was many lengths in front While Clyde Van Dusen showed an exceedingly dull performance Morsun ran a smashing race Despite the fact that he was fully eight lengths behind the leader on the stretch turn he made up so much ground that his backers were rooting for him to overtake Jack Howe at the end endIX IX PINK OF CONDITION CONDITIONWhile While Morsun ran a good race it is doubtful if he could have beaten T S Jordan this afternoon The latter appeared to be in rare form and should be a factor in all high class sprinting races during the summer sea ¬ son He was ridden by jockey C Meyer MeyerThe The days proceedings opened with a great surprise when Mothers Choice one of the outsiders was an easy winner in the first race Her success was mainly due to jockey Ayrauds clever riding The boy stayed close to the rail with the filly all the way and finding an opening on the inside of Negodale the early pacemaker in the stretch slipped through to gain a good lead which he held Negodale showed good speed in pacemaking and easily bested Hidden Thoughts which finished third Calgary Kay was a short priced favorite in the race but at no time threatened the early leaders The race was over six furlongs and the winner paid 3485 3485Governor Governor Pratt the grey gelding that races for J Marsch was made favorite in the sec ¬ ond race and won in handy fashion Jockey Paul Neal who had the mount on the win ¬ ner never permitted him to drop far behind the pace set by Cecelia Grob and in the run home came fast to pass the latter and hold Tommy Lad safe Roodles was third and showed a good effort Ridden by Morrison he was in last place on the far turn but despite going wide on the stretch turn fin tished with a rush and would have been a real factor with a good ride The race was over six furlongs furlongsThe The third race brought out the smallest field of the
