First Event COLLINSVILLE 111 May 28 Fairmount Parks streak of winning outsiders was broken today and the large crowd of mutuel players had a much better time of it than on previous afternoons when the rewards were not so widely distributed After Coy third choice in the betting won the first race in which the first and second choices finished second and third respectively For ¬ tunate Mann scored in the second for the favorite players and thereafter most of the winners were those that had been exten ¬ sively backed The track was fast and some of the finishes were so close as to require the judges placing to make known the winners winnersOne One of the most popular victories next to that of Fortunate Mann was that of E McCuans Arrogant a very consistent sprint ¬ er Arrogant won his third race of the meet ing in a very close finish over Ragabald The McCuan racer was the popular choice Mrs J Chesney furnished the winner of the first race in Coy and it was his second straight Seven of the lower grade platers participated at threequarters Ossie H the favorite which had won his three previous starts was second and Le Flore third thirdApprentice Apprentice W Day who has come to the front with his good riding was astride the winner and rode him with confidence for he failed to display any concern despite his be ¬ ing last at the half mile ground As they rounded the turn for home the diminutive rider took him to the outside and the gallant little horse continued with good speed until he had reached Ossie H After a brief duel lie wore down the McCuan representative and had a length and one half advantage as they passed the judges stand The winner was neglected in the speculation with a result that he paid 2266 for 2 2ODDSOX ODDSOX AVrXNER AVrXNERAfter After the defeat of eleven consecutive favorites Fortunate Mann made good for the talent The W M Cain representative was at oddson and easily gained the verdict over My Davy an outsider which raced in improved fashion to get second place C E Grahams King Bank was third thirdApprentice Apprentice C Pegg had the mount on the winner and his alertness at the barrier was a big factor in the final result for he had the victor running when the break came Kalani set the pace for a quarter mile but Pegg encountered much difficulty in trying to restrain the Cain gelding behind the pace and had to assume the lead He was never headed thereafter but had to be shaken up lightly nearing the end as My Davy made a determined bid The latter faltered how ¬ ever and would have given way to the chal challenge lenge of King Bank in a few more strides stridesOrestes Orestes II figured in a rather dull per performance formance despite the energetic tactics of apprentice Buddy Hanford HanfordO O E Reamy saddled the winner of the one onemile mile and onesixteenth third race when Son Ami proved gamer than Gaineswood The Thelatter latter made the victor turn in his best per formance to get the verdict by a nose in a grueling finish that began during the final eighth Classy had a length and onehalf on Tarnish for third place placeIIA IIA FOItDS BEST RIDE RIDEIt It was one of Buddy Hanfords best rides that landed the winner in front for he ap ¬ peared beaten as the horses neared the wire The rider put everything he had into play and got the son of Chateau going at top speed again and gained the decision The performance of Gaineswood was a brilliant one considering that he forced the winner along for the entire distance and stood a drive with great courage With a better break Tarnish might have beaten Classy for third money moneyEd Ed McCuans Arrogant accounted for the threequarters fourth race when he outgamed E E Majors Ragabald in a gruelling fin ¬ ish and while the latter forced the winner to do his best to get the decision he was tinder severe pressure to take the place from Head Cover which figured in a close fit for third money getting his placing by a short head from Cuevas CuevasApprentice Apprentice G Cimerak handled the un sexed son of Dominant in clever fashion for he took the winner under slight restraint after he disposed of Lila G which forced the early pace This proved an asset at the end for it saved him for the strenu ¬ ous effort that culminated during the stretch racing E K Brysons Sambo G which has figured in many disappointments was the medium of heavy support but was badly outrun the opening half and at no time gave evidence of being a serious contender contenderFig Fig Leaf carrying the colors of W R Cox was returned the winner of the St Louis Star Purse fifth and feature race A B Hancocks Perjury was second with J Leiters Domina accounting for the third part of the purse Lloyd Geving had the mount on the win ¬ ner which was backed to favoritism at post time and his good ride proved a material factor in getting the filly home in front Purple Robe raced into command soon after the start and for a time it appeared as if she would maintain the long lead she had gained the opening half But when they reached the stretch she gave way badly without any resistance and the victor sped by her with ease but Perjury which had came from far back was gaining rapidly and as they neared the finish she challenged gamely but to no avail as Geving kept the win ¬ ner going to be home a head in front frontAmong Among the apprentices that have won their first race at the current meeting are C Pegg under contract to W M Cain W Day affiliated with Murdock McQuillen R Wimmer with E E Major T Brady who piloted tne longest priced winner of the meeting and will do the riding for Vic Gallos establishment C Felix protege of E E Doc Watson and A Belyski under contract to the R C stable of W H Hoff ¬ mann mannOn On account of an epidemic of coughing which has prevailed among the majority of horses for the past week racing secretary Julius Reeder has encountered much diffi ¬ culty in filling the high class races This accounts for the many races that have em ¬ braced the lower grade performers
