THISTLE DOWN INAUGURAL Cold Weather Fails to Affect Attendance at Cleveland Break of Dawn Accounts for Opening Day DayFeature Feature Long Joe Victor VictorIn In Fifth CLEVELAND Ohio May 28 Clarence Davisons Break of Dawn was a handy win ¬ ner of the Inaugural Purse fourth and principal offering of the opening days card at Thistle Down Park this afternoon A P Canales High Score the favorite raced to second place with R J Moores Rain or Shine third thirdAs As the start came High Score went into the lead with Break of Dawn and Retort following in closest pursuit Rain or Shine dwelt slightly but quickly raced up into a contending position When on the stretch turn jockey J Redding on Break of Dawn made his move and overhauling High Score a furlong out retained a safe lead there ¬ after High Score was a handy second al ¬ though unable to withstand the winners chal ¬ lenge Rain or Shine was best of the others as Retort tired rapidly after showing early speed The remainder were always outpaced outpacedFollowing Following rain last night which rendered the track slow the temperature took a sud ¬ den drop today A wintry breeze swept over the course and through the stands making topcoats a necessity for comfort Heavy dark clouds throughout the day gave the sky an autumnlike appearance Despite the uninviting conditions a surprisingly good crowd turned out to welcome the return of the thoroughbreds to the picturesque plant o the Thistle Down Jockey Club The club house was particularly well patronized Large and well matched fields paraded in a ma i jority of the seven races which made it dif ¬ ficult to select the winners winnersBY BY 2TARKOW 31 ARC IX IXLong Long Joe finished with a brilliant burst of speed througli the stretch in the fifth race and in a driving finish earned the verdict by a narrow margin from Misnomer The latter also came fast from the rear during the run home and finished with good courage Simon came from far back to beat the others Don T and Boyish Bob were prominent in the early stages but both tired after reach ¬ ing the stretch stretchTo To J M Reed went the honor of winning the initial race when his Watch On showed the way by a comfortable margin at the end Jockey R Buckley hustled him into the lead shortly after the start and he was never seriously threatened Noble Charge moved up on the inside while on the far turn and during the stretch drive outlasted Bavelle Fronk for second honors Fair Glow was prominent in early stages but quit badly badlyFinishing Finishing with a brilliant rush on the out ¬ side of the leaders in the final furlong S B Jones Madam Florence got up to head Gibbys Lillian during the final strides of the second race It was a thrilling finish and her victory came somewhat as a sur ¬ prise Gibbys Lillian displaced Mays Lutz from the leadership when straightened out in the stretch but failed to withstand the winners challenge challengeThe The colors of Rome Respess were much in evidence in the third race when Doc Connor was hustled to the front shortly after the start and was never seriously menaced Jim Miller was a forward factor until well into the stretch but Night Cry had the most in reserve for the final drive and eventually secured the second portion of the purse with considerable to spare Jim Miller saved third This trio dominated the running throughout Tom Hill wheeled as the break came and Marone Manor was withdrawn due to his unruly actions while en route to the post
