PLATERS IN THE LIMELIGHT No Outstanding Feature on Long Branch Card Soli Gills Wins His First for Morrissey. TORONTO, Ont., Oct. 11. The plater brigade furnished the entertainment at Long Branch today. The entire seven races were governed by the claiming clause. While there was no stellar attraction, it was thoroughly enjoyable sport that came with the running of each of the contests. Despite the cool weather that prevailed, it was a crowd up to week-day standard that was on hand. occupying the most important position on thj card was a mile and seventy yard affair for ,500 platers. It marked the first victory of Soli Gills since he was purchased by W. Morrissey at the Seagram sale conducted in Windsor during the summer. M. Mc-Leods Athol was second and Black Diamond, from the Erindale Stahle, was third. Incidentally the three placed thoroughbreds are all locally owned. Hidden by Frank Mann, Soli Gills was permitted to race along in close pursuit of the leaders. Athol and Black Diamond were fighting it out for the lead closely lapped, while Bylona, which had shown early speed, dropped back. Athol was on the outside and forged in front of the Erindale color-bearer near the quarter post. Mann had called- upon Soli Gills and the latter moved up on the outside. Athol was still in front passing the furlong post, but the Morrissey gelding was running smoothly on the outside. Soil Gills soon raced past the leaders without need of pressure and Athol had a half "engths advantage over Black Diamond. Bylona, after his display of ear speed, dropped back and wound up in sixth place. Syndic, from the stable of Mrs. R. E. Webster, after many attempts finally found a field he could beat when he lasted to defeat R. H. News Corsinax and ten other maiden juvenile Canadian-breds that met In the five and one-half furlongs of the opening dash. The show position went to Tannia, from the Thorncliffe Stable. Jockey F. Dougherty, who is riding in splendid form at present, was astride the winner. Another thrilling finish came with the running of the second race, another six-furlong affair for juvenile platers, when Authority and Dark War reached the finish noses apart to finish as named. Semele, a rank outsider, landed the show and rewarded with a mutuel return of 0.25 for the usual ticket. Jockey N. Foden rounded out a double for the afternoon when he piloted Sir Byron to victory over the odds-on choice, Donny Johnny. This was in the third, vhich was framed for platers, over the three-quarters mile distance. Altsheb, the early leader, lasted to be third. A limit field of mediocre sprinting platers met in the six furlongs of the fourth. It resulted in a driving finish, with Chanson Belle, the choice, barely lasting long enough to withstand the closing rush of Visionary Hour. Golden Storm, a neglected factor, landed third.
