W. S. KILMER CLOSES BIG DEAL American Buys Five Choicely-Bred Brood Mares in France. I Binghamton Sportsman Also Leases Cele-rlna Six Mares to Be Shipped Hero in Near Future. NEW YORK, N. Y., Oct. 11. The most Important bloodstock transaction in years was recently concluded by Willis Sharpe Kilmer on the one hand and his French representatives on the other. The Bingham-ton sportsman has purchased in France five choicely bred brood mares, one superb yearling filly and has leased for a term of years one of the best-bred young mares in the world, this mare also being foaled in France. The first of the mares is Esmelus, a bay, foaled in England in 1921, Imported into the United States in 1923, exported to France in 1924, and she entered the stud that year, her first two foals, Forgetful and Polyaxa, being winners. This mare is a daughter of Poly-znelus, five times premier sire in England and responsible for three winners of the Epsom Derby, from Esmeralda, she by the Carbine sire, Fowling Piece, from Hermione, a daughter of Florizel II. and Countess Lilian, by Isonomy and Lady Lumley, by See Saw. This is one of the best families in the book and goes back to the peerless Alice Hawthorne, one of the best race mares and producers of all time. This mare is in foal to Blandford, a son of Swynford, and a very uccessful sire in England, responsible for two Epsom Derby winners, Trigo and Blenheim. The next mare is Pugnacity, a bay, foaled 1b England in 1922 and entering the stud in France in 1925. She has produced the filly Hippolyta, by Bruleur, and the colt Bishops Rock, by Teddy, the latter a good winner last year. This mare is in foal to the high-class stake winner Asteroide, and is a daughter of the "Triple Crown" and New-narket Gold Cup winner Crusader, a son of Bayardo, from Decagone. CHOICE OF THE LOT. Possibly the finest mare in the lot is Pha-ona, a bay brown, foaled in England in 1923 end put to stud in France in 1926. This mare is a daughter of the premier sire Pha-laris, son of Polymelus, progenitor of Manna, the 2,000 Guineas and Derby winner and leading sire in England this year; of Pharos, sire of the 2,000 Guineas and Derby winner of 1931 Camerbnian, and of the great Fairway. He sired the rising young sire of this country, Sickle, and a host of other high class winners. She is from Destination, she by the premier sire Desmond, from LEtoile, a daughter of Isinglass and Astrology, she by the Derby winner and seven times premier sire Hermit, from Stella. Destination, dam of Phaona. won three times at two and is the dam of the winners Vale and Bridgent. LEtoile, the second dam, la also the dam of the high class race horse and superb sire Ecouen, and is a half-sister to that remarkable producer Saint Celestra, from which are descended Diavolezza, winner of the French Guineas; Menzala, a high class winner in Poland; Gaurisankar, winner of 340,000 francs in France and over 6,000 In India; Aldebaran, winner of 142,000 francs in France and a good sire, and Asterus, winner of the French 2,000 Guineas, the Champion Stakes in England. Astrology, third dam of Phaona, is immortal as the dam of Star Shoot, five times premier sire in America. This line has exerted a dominant influence on racing and breeding history the world over and to It belong Maid of Masham, Fair Play, Son o Mine, Saint Damien, Winkfields Pride, Cyllene, La Sagesse Oaks, Flamingo 2,000 Guineas, High Strung, winner of the Futurity and Pimlico Futurity in this country; Dark Legend and Zariba. Blood like this i3 priceless. The mare has at foot a grand colt foal by the Swynford sire, Blandford, sire of the Epsom Derby winners, Trigo and Blenheim, and is safely in foal to Blenheim. For years stud masters the world over have been seeking daughters of the successful sire, Chaucer, a son of the unbeaten St. Simon and Canterbury Pilgrim. Kilmer has succeeded in acquiring in this transaction a daughter of Chaucer. This is Chaucrita, a bay brown mare, foaled in England in 1924, retired to the stud in 1927. She is by Chaucer from Cry Help, by Irishman Desmond Calumet by Gallinule from Stewardess IV., a daughter of Cabin Boy Jack Tar Matilda from Trob, by Sterling. BEGULAR PRODUCER. This mare is a most regular producer. In 1929 she produced the winner Chaucrona by Town Guard. A year later she produced a fine colt by the same sire that is highly regarded in France. In 1931 she produced a fine colt foal by the successful sire, Dark Legend. This year she has a grand brown colt foal by the successful sire, Blandford, and is now in foal to Asteroide. Flo II. is a bay mare foaled in France in 1924 and entered the stud in 1928. She is a t daughter of the premier sire Alcanatra by Perth Toison dOr, by Le Sancy, from I Fulda H., by the 2,000 Guineas and Derby winner and great sire Sunstar, from Full Cry, by Flying Fox, from Lady Villikins, by Hagioscope, from Dinah. The yearling is a daughter of the high class race horse and premier sire Pharos, leading sire in England in 1931, from Jean Gow, a daughter of Neil Gow and Jane Shore, she by Cupbearer, from Santa Casa, by Bona Vista, from Lorette, by Galliard, from Penitent. Jean Gow did not race and ha3 produced the winner Janistra. Her dam, Jane Shore, was a winner and produced the winners Jane Gow and Rather Dark. Santa Casa, the next dam, won the City of London Breeders Foal Plate and over 5,000 and is the dam of five winners. Kilmer was unable to purchase Celerina, but did manage to lease her for a number of years. She is one of the most desirable young mares in France and carried the colors of Ralph Beaver Strassburger with marked success during the two seasons she raced. A chestnut filly, foaled in 1928, she la a daughter of that ffreat race horse and premier sire Teddy, progenitor of Sir Gal-lahad III., Asterus and Aethelstan. Her dam, Diavolezza, by Le Saggitaire, fromSt. Astra, she by Ladas, from St. Celestra, by St. Angelo, from Astrology, by Hermit, wa3 the winner of the French 1,000 Guineas. All six of these mares will be shipped to the United States within the next two weeks, the yearling filly, as stated above, will be left in charge of Frank Carter, to be trained as a two-year-old,
