GAY CRUSADER DEAD From England comes news of the death of the great race horse, though somewhat of a disappointment as a sire, Gay Crusader, wartime winner of the triple crown. Gay Crusader, winner of the 1917 Two Thousand Guineas Derby and St. Leger, and rated by the veteran jockey, Steve Donoghue, as the best horse he ever rode, was -destroyed at the Manton House Stud, Marlborough. He was nineteen years old. Owned by the late A. W. Cox, who raced in the nom-de-turf of "Mr. Fairie," Gay Crusader, by Bayardo, from Gay Laura, by Beppo, won once as a two-year-old, the Criterion Stakes at Newmarket, but in his second season he won, besides the "triple crown," the substitute Ascot Gold Cup, called the Newmarket Gold Cup, and the Champion Lowther and Limekiln Stakes, all run at Newmarket. Retired to the stud in 1918, at a fee of ,000, his services were in great demand. While he sired many good horses, including Hot Night, Bright Night, Hurstwood, Cross Bow, Kincardine, Saracen, Legatee, Cavendo, Kings Oven, Taj Kasra, Leopardus and Cap-a-Pico, he was not as successful as a stallion as had been anticipated.
