SHADY WEL DEFEATS HOKUAO Seagram Five Year Old First in Canadian Derby at Hamilton Wall on Winner HAMILTON Ont June 26 Shady Well E F Seagrams bay fiveyearold daughter of Purple Shade and The Wishing Well with jockey Nick Wall in the saddle won the Canadian Derby feature event of the open ¬ ing days card here at the Hamilton Jockey Club course this afternoon Mrs Nat Rays Stealingaway was second with W I New marchs Holcuao third and Crofter from the D Raymond stable fourth The winner ran the distance in 147 over a track that had been slowed up due to the showers that fell during the afternoon afternoonThe The start was directly in front of the grandstand and starter Tom Rowe lost little time in getting them away in perfect order with the lightweight of the party Miss Monoa sprinting into the lead as they made the club house turn Jockey Vercher astride Stealingaway whipped his mount up to race along with the flying leader while the re ¬ mainder of the field of five at this stage were strung out behind in single file fileOnce Once straightened out in the back stretch Stealingaway shook off Miss Monoa to open up a twolength lead Frank Mann permitted Hokuao to move along after the leader rac ¬ ing into second place At this stage of the race Shady Well was in last place placeDown Down the back stretch and well around the lower turn Stealingaway showed in front appearing to be racing well within himself having shaken off a challenge from Hokuao HokuaoIt It was not until midway on the stretch turn that jockey Wall called upon the Sea ¬ gram mare but once given her head she moved up with a rush on the outside to be in second place before the field had straightened out for the run through the home stretch Still Stealingaway loomed in front but suddenly he was noticed to short ¬ en stride having nothing left as Shady Well challenged at the eighth post leaving the latter to go on to one of the easiest kinds of victories
