LATONIA DERBY DECIDEDLY OPEN RACE Absence of Cavalcade Assures Larger Field and More Evenly Contested Struggle War Pledge Looms LoomsUp Up as Dangerous Dark Horse LATONIA Ky June 26 With Derby eligibles racing at Latonia lacking qualifica ¬ tions to be considered formidable contenders for the 10000 added Latoqia Derby which will have its fiftysecond running Saturday at the historic Milldale course there is every indication that threeyearolds racing at other tracks will monopolize honors in the im ¬ pending classic The ineligibility of J W Parrshs New Deal in the Latonia fixture gives the invaders a clear field and not one other threeyearold here could be depended upon to defend the title against such performers as Time Clock Rose Cross Plight Mata Hari Peace Chance and others that probably will be sent on to contest for honors The decision of trainer Bob Smith to keep Caval ¬ cade at Chicago and send Time Clock to represent Mrs Isabel Dodge Sloane makes the race a more open one Cavalcade would have had the race at his mercy and it is not likely that many would have chosen to send their hopefuls after the almost invin ¬ cible son of Lancegaye LancegayeOn On the other hand it isregretable that Cavalcade will not be in the field as there are many patrons in this region who would be pleased to see the Derby champion in competition regardless of the opposition oppositionWith With Time Clock Plight and Rose Cross definite starters among the invaders efforts now are being made to induce Pete Cqyne to send J E Wideners Peace Chance and Clyde Van Dusen to ship C T Fishers Mata Hari here hereAmong Among the most prominent candidates which have been racing at Latonia are War Pledge and Howard War Pledge though only a recent graduate from the maiden ranks is a much improved horse and his owners have much faith in him Howard still is a maiden though his works have convinced his handlers that he has a chance in the Derby DerbyTuesday Tuesday morning Howard worked a mile and threeeighths in 222 handily The fractions were 24 50 116 143 209 and 222 222The The Ridgeview Stock Farms Ridge Mor and the Young Bros Fiji also eligibles blew out Tuesday morning in preparation for WednesdayWith longer trials Wednesday With the arrival of Devby week resident manager Russell Sweeney reports a lively interest in the race and preparations are being made to handle the largest crowd La ¬ tonia has had in several years A sellout of box reservations is indicated by the de ¬ mand for them
