EXERCISES HORSE AT 63 COLLINSVILLE 111 June 26 Sixtythree years old and still riding horses Beiieve It or not thats S Chief Johnson star jockey of twoscore years ago who is now at Fair mount Park with the S T Baxter stable and although turned down by the stewards in his request for a license to return to ac ¬ tual competition because of his age goes on galloping horses every day being one of the oldest if not the oldest exercise boy in the country Johnson a fullblooded Cherokee Indian put up among his many rides in his heyday one which Col E R Bradley is quoted to have called the greatest he has ever seen on a race track It was at New Orleans when six horses came speeding down the stretch head and head and John ¬ son throwing away his whip virtually lifted his mount over the wire by a whisker Johnson incidentally believes that whips are a nuisance and that the sport would be benefited if they were taken away from all jockeys
