NOTE— Peace Chance and Golden Way Doubtful Starters. 1 | j ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, 111., July 3.— With twenty-two horses entered in the Stars and Stripes Handicap, including nearly all of the nations outstanding middle-distance performers, Arlington Parks Fourth of July special promises to be one of the most exciting races ever offered in Chicago. With all overnight candidates starting, the mile and a furlong event will have a gross value of 5,880. Heading the list of probable starters under 120 pounds is William R. Coes smart four-year-old Ladysman, conqueror i of Equipoise in a thrilling stretch duel in the Suburban Handicap this spring. Silvio Coucci, rated by many experts as the greatest American jockey of the year, will be here to guide the rangy chestnut, which distinguished himself in 1932 by becoming the juvenile champion. Another formidable candidate is D. A Woods- Indian Runner, victorious in the Stars and Stripes, as well as the Arlington Inaugural, last summer, which has been assigned 118 pounds. Having already won the Inaugural this year, Indian Runner is out to score one of the most unique doubles ever scored in racing. Considerable surprise was caused when Judd Alt, western agent of Joseph E. Wideners stable, entered the crack three-year-old Peace Chance and the older Golden Continued on thirty-third page. TWENTY-TWO IN STARS AND STRIPES HANDICAP Continued from first pige. Way in the Stars and Stripes. Both horses are now en route, being due in the morning, but they are not expected to start. Trainer Pete Coyne arrives with the horses and will determine then if either is to represent the eastern sportsman. If Widener has a starter, Wayne Wright will ride the horse. In addition to Ladysman as well as the Widener horses, the East may be represented by the Brookmeade Stables Inlander and Good Goods and Belair Studs Jovius, an arrival from the East this morning. Several other three-year-olds besides Peace Chance were entered this morning, including William Sachsenmaiers Indian Salute; J. W. Parrishs New Deal; H. P. Headleys Thomasville; G. W. Ogles Patch-pocket; Corsicana Stables Bien Fait and Brookmeade Stables Good Goods. This will be the sixth running of the Stars and Stripes Handicap and previous winners include Dowagiac, Blue Larkspur, Plucky Play, Equipoise and Indian Runner. a
