! BROOKLYN HANDICAP TODAY Small But High Class Field Named for Closing Feature of Queens » County Jockey Crab Meeting. NEW YORK, N. Y., July 3.— For the clos- • ing day at the Aqueduct meeting the Fourth I of Jury, the big feature is the old Brooklyn - Handicap of a mile and a furlong. Only five t have been named for the renewal of this L prize but it is a smart field and one that is I calculated to bring an excellent contest. J The Wheatley Stables Dark Secret, win-L ner of the same prize last year, is top weight I under 126 pounds, but he will also be the post favorite for the running. Opposing him 1 are the three-year-olds Discovery, Rose [ Cross and Fleam, while the C. V. Whitney 1 silks are represented by the good campaigner, Halcyon, which has been used principally • for sprinting. Discovery, on his recent brilliant victory at seven furittngs, will have many followers, and it is safe to promise he will have it all over the others. ■ I Halcyon is in exceedingly well under 110 pounds, and while the distance is a bit longer than he has been racing, such a pull in the weights is of importance. Rose Cross is just back from a bad race in the Latonia Derby, but his victory in the Dwyer was impressive, and he may be a real contender, as he seems to like the Aqueduct footing. Fleam is a good filly, and the only one of the gentle sex in the field. Her last race was entirely up to her best form, but she I has trained nicely, and in any event she will race coupled with Dark Secret so that it will amount to a four-horse race as far as the wagering is concerned. The Brooklyn Handicap had its first running at the old Gravesend Course in 1887, and it resulted in that famous fighting finish among Dry Monopol, Blue Wing and Hidalgo. On through its glorious history among the winners have been The Bard Exile, Castaway II., Teeny, Judge. Morrow Dr. Rice, Hornpipe, Sir Walter, Ornament, Kinley Mack, Conroy, and the filly Reina that scored a sensational victory over Advance Guard, Irish Lad, Fitz Herbert, Whisk Broom n.. Friar Rock, Exterminator, Grey Lag and Questionnaire. These are just some of them, but each was a giant of his day, with the exception of the filly Reina, which I whipped the giant. Of all these, Exterminator carried the greatest weight to victory when, in his seventh year, he shouldered 135 pounds to beat Grey Lag, which was in under 126 pounds Dark Secret was the winner of the 1933 running, and the greatest value the old handicap ever reached was in the 1908 renewal when James R. Keenes 3elt, another good one, earned 9,750.
