BIG FAIRMOUNT DAILY DOUBLE 1 ,. , AH Night and Tocaya Return Backers 48.48 for . ♦ Collinsviile Program Dominated by Platers — Song Hit Earns Purse in the Fourth Race. ■ COLLLNSVILLE, III, July 1— The seven-race program at Fairmount Park was turned over to lowly platers today when racing secretary Leigh failed to fill a feature. The fifth race, or the Wellston Purse, at a mile, brought eight of the older division together, embracing such local favorites as Gulfelano, Lugen Luggage, Northern Sir, Mokan, St. Mica, Gold Tip, Bug Hunter and Ben Minturn, the latter the only maiden Jn the race to try for the purse. A stiff breeze coming out of the northwest along with low hanging clouds made weather conditions much more pleasant than the previous day. Better racing conditions brought a large crowd out to the course to witness the second-to-last day of the thirty-four day meeting. The opener, a five furlongs dash for two-year-olds in which eleven met, resulted in a win for Baby Sweep, carrying the silks of Mrs. J. C. Gillem. Adelia A. was second and Willa T. third. The winner outsped her rivals and opened a commanding lead after turning into the stretch and, at the eighth post, was five lengths before Willa T. and Adelia A. D. Sykes was taking it easy with the daughter of Sweep in the final fifty yards. Willa T. and Adelia A. were well played second and third choices, while the winner was made the favorite. All Night, L. Resseguets three-year-old son of Nocturnal, left the maiden ranks when he accounted for the second race in easy fashion from Blake and Friend Tom, the choices, over six furlongs. The winner, overlooked in the betting, had the services of apprentice D. Edwards. Forced to begin from the outside of the stall gate due to his fractiousness, Edwards got the Resseguet horse off in front and opened up a good lead. Once in front Edwards rated the winner nicely and went under the wire three lengths before Blake, while the latter was a head before Friend Tom, the favorite, to save second place. A |2 ticket on the winner paid his backers 7.64. The third race, in which twelve mediocre platers met at six furlongs, found J. D. Mikels Tocaya winning her second race of the year when she was an easy winner over Equation and Emma Lee, a field horse. In the opening quarter, H. Manifold took his time with the winner and followed Royal See and Spero easily in third place. Rounding the far turn, Manifold came to the outside of the leaders and, racing Spero into defeat, shook off Equation and was being eased up at the finish with a two lengths lead. Equation was tiring and outlasted Emma Lee by a half length. The "Daily Double," consisting of All Night in the second race and Tocaya, which was the favorite and winner of the third race, paid twelve winning holders of the combination the good return of 4*48. I In a stirring finish Song Hit, carrying the silks of H. A. Otto, was a driving winner of the fourth race, his third of the meeting. Galapan was second and Gurgler a close third. Song Hit was slow to get going but, racing on the outside going down the back stretch, made up ground rapidly and opened up a length lead, with Dark Seeker second, a half length before Gurgler. They raced this way until entering the stretch, when Dark Seeker, racing wide on the turn, tired and was replaced by Gurgler, which saved much ground. Galapan was forced to go outside of Dark Seeker in the stretch and, coming with a rush, failed to catch the winner by a half length, with Gurgler a neck behind the second horse. •
