HATCH RACER EASY WINNER Sweepstaff, in First Start at Montreal, Scores Over Colored Artist and Roselys. MONTREAL, Que., July 3.— Sweepstaff, three-year-old chestnut son of Sweepster and Saffron, making his first appearance in Montreal, carried the light and dark blue silks of H. C. Hatch on to an easy triumph in the Town of Mount Royal Handicap, fashioned for Canadian-breds, over five and one-half furlongs distance. A. Gauthiers Colored Artist ran to second position, a length and one-half back and a neck in advance of O. Burgess Roselys. The winner, ridden by the apprentice, H. Peden, was rushed in the lead and raced head and head with Lady Worthmore for the first two furlongs, then came Colored Artist and Roselys. Rounding the far turn, Peden called on the Hatch colt, which quickly drew away into a length lead, was steadied along through the stretch run and won with speed in reserve. Colored Artist also passed Lady Worthmore in the last quarter mile, began tiring in the last sixteenth, but outlasted Roselys, which came fast on the outside through the stretch run. A good crowd was on hand to witness the days sport. The weather conditions could not be improved on with a cool breeze sweeping through the course and the track at its best.
