SHARE TOP WEIGHT HONORS Top Row and Teralice Assigned 118 Pounds for Santa Clara Handicap at Bay Meadows. SAN MATEO, Calif., April 10. Nineteen of the best horses -at Bay Meadows, were today allotted weights for the Santa Clara Handicap, six furlongs sprint feature which will headline Saturdays program at the San Mateo track. The Santa Clara is for a ,000 added purse and Top Row, winner of the St. Patricks Handicap and the Spring Handicap, and Teralice, star sprinter from the stable of Percy M. Pike, were equally weighted with 118. pounds. This is top weight in the race. Just how Top Row and Teralice will fare against speedy opposition in the race remains to be seen. Teralice will have the help of Indiantown and Carisbrooke, both very fast horses in the contest, and the Pike trio will likely rule favorites for the event. Indiantown is burdened with 115 pounds while Carisbrooke has 109. In a recent sprint, the pair finished noses apart with Carisbrooke the winner. A. A. Baroni, owner of Top Row, has also entered three animals. Aside from his star, he has named Morning Mail and Sand Cloud. The former is a good three-year-old, while Sand Cloud is returning to the races following a lengthy rest. Other speed horses in the field are Risky Miss, Carmanchita, R. D. Powers, Frisky Matron, Chictoney, Gay World, Gaillardia, Cuyamaca, Johns Birthday and Riskulus. Following are the weights: Risky Miss, 104; Carmanchita, .98; Top Row, 118; Sand Cloud, 104; Morning Mail, 101; R. D. Powers, 100; Nubs, 95; Frisky Matron, 110; Chictoney, 104; Camino Real, 102; Gay World, 108; Gaillardia, 105; Seacliff, 106; Teralice, 118; Indiantown, 115; Carisbrooke, 109; Riskulus, 115; Cuyamaca, 95; Johns Birthday, 108. The present meeting at Bay Meadows will likely close Tuesday, April 16. Although general manager William P. Kyne had stated a few days ago that he would request permission of the California Horse Racing Board to extend the session indefinitely, it appears that Tanforan will likely be ready to open on their scheduled date of April 20. Kyne stated that Bay Meadows would race Monday and Tuesday, which, after all, will not be an extension of the meeting as the track has had two off-days due to bad weather. Should Tanforan not be ready to open a week from Saturday, Bay Meadows may carry on until such a time as preparations have been completed at the San Bruno plant. Bay Meadows is preparing for a big week end. Racing secretary Everett has several good cards in view for the remaining days of the week, and the ,000 added Santa Clara Handicap, destined to bring out the best sprinters on the grounds, will be staged as Saturdays feature. Small Mortgage making her f irs start in a year won a purse for Maj. Sven Christenson, in the opening race at Bay Meadows, Wednesday. Having the speed, Small Mortgage went to the front at once and under capable handling by apprentice A. Gray was never headed. Deline Bank finished second but was disqualified for fouling. The place award going to May Rap, while Brown Idyll was third. It was the first disqualification of the meeting. Small Mortgage was the favorite and paid .60. The handle was ,648.
