PETE, shuffled back when leaving the back stretch, went to the outside midway of the final turn, weaved his way between the leaders during the stretch drive and was up in the closing sixteenth. EVENING CHIMES improved her position on the outside, made a wide turn into the home stretch, but closed with good courage when straightened out. HAPPY EASTER broke well, but was unable to enter a forward position. VERITAS was used up setting the" pace and tired after reaching the home stretch. BOOCORD challenged strongly at the turn, but quit badly thereafter. CORA KAY was held safe. EDYTH M. displayed early speed. Scratched 08827 Pekin, 107; 08856 Red Commander, 110. Start good and slow. Won easily;, second and third driving.. SULA, quickest to begin, opened up a clear lead in .the first half mile, was kept in the better footing and held sway when settled for the final drive, but broke down at the finish and was dismounted. PARADUN raced closest to the winner from the beginning, but could not menace the winner in the closing stages. GUM, sluggish in the early racing, secured racing room in the last half mile, but failed to respond when tha closing drive came. COLD SHOULDER lacked early speed and was never a factor, though passing tiring horses. ARDOR raced evenly. ROYAL COMMAND did not fancy the footing and dropped back after going an eighth. Won easily; second and third driving. - DELIBERATE, a rapid beginner, sprinted into a commanding lead after reaching the home stretch, saved ground the entire trip and held JOHN P. W. safe. The latter was forced to race on the outside from the beginning and came courageously-under a drive in the final issue. PLAYFUL TOUR broke slower than usual, raced wide to reach contention, then came with good energy in the late stages. JOHN TIO made a stout effort when reaching the home stretch, but faltered in the closing test. MARNAN had no excuse. SQUAWKER tired steadily after a show of speed in the opening eighth. WINTER SPORT followed close to the leaders from the beginning, raced STE. LOUISE and LEMONT into defeat, then fought it out courageously. STE. LOUISE showed nice speed in the footing while setting the pace, saved ground and continued with good courage. LEMONT was stoutly handled and held on gamely. FLYING FALCON showed a good effort. BORSA was hard ridden and had no excuse. FAIRISK was unable to threaten. ILCHESTER sprinted clear after reaching the back stretch, was steadied in front until reaching the home stretch, came out into the firmer footing at the stretch entrance, but bore to the inside all during the closing eighth and barely lasted to win. MIDSHIPMAN moved up strongly when put to a drive, slipped through on the inside of the winner and closed stoutly while in tight quarters. ALADDINS DREAM responded nicely after being given a breathing spell, but lacked racing room all during the closing sixteenth when finishing cn the inside and his rider was forced to ease him back right at the end. INFILEE moved up willingly on the outside of the leaders and closed gamely under punishment in the final issue. CALORIC saved ground from the beginning, but could not eain cn the leaders. IDLE FLIRT was kept on the inside during the early running, was placed to punishment in the final three-eighths, but failed to challenge seriously. ABSTAIN was badly outrun. BARNEY SEXTON quit.
