ARLINGTON, Texas, April 10. Thirty-one of the forty candidates for the 5,000 Texas Derby now are in training at Arlington Downs for the third renewal of the rich stake over one and one-eighth miles Saturday, April 20. Among them are several of the leading three-year-olds of the country, while such thoroughbreds as Col. E. R. Bradleys Black Helen, M. L. Schwartz Good Flavor and seven others are yet to arrive at the Downs to conclude preparations for the Derby. Elwood Sachserimaiers and Phil Reuters Roman Soldier, winner of four races at Hialeah Park, and which won his Texas debut in impressive fashion, is the outstanding "of the horses now at the Downs. Second choice to Roman Soldier is the Milky Way Farms Whiskolo, which finished second to Mrs. Payne Whitneys Gillie in the Santa Anita Derby. Whiskolo is on edge for the race, needing only a little sharpening up before being sent to the post for the rich plum. There is a possibility that he will be started Saturday in order to give him a race before the Derby. Along with Whiskolo are three other Milky Way Farms thoroughbreds, South Gallant, Whereaway and Gallaclay eligible for the Derby, from the group, Whiskolo and South Gallant have been named as definite starters by trainer Robert McGarvey. The Geneseo Stables Whizzaway, winner of eight straight races, the last of which was won at the Downs Monday over a field of Derby candidates in the same time that Roman Soldier covered the mile and a sixteenth, is held third choice. B. A. Jones is working Prince Splendor toward the Derby, having shipped the horse here in advance of his other horses. He also has Bert Reid and Hope Eternal on the grounds but Prince Splendor is conceded the best chance of starting. The dark horse of the race is Col. W. A. Jones Furfiber, which won five straight in Florida, before coming to the Downs. He was beaten on his first out here but came back to score over a field of other Derby candidates. Other eligibles for the Derby on the grounds are. Maylite, Hilise, Dark Woman, Bulstrode, Bill Donoghue, Cross Ruff, Eddie J., Tracker, Wild Fire, Silence III., Gov.
