Smith, developer of Cavalcade and other great horses, declares Psychic Bid to be the fastest horse he has ever trained. The chestnut son of Chance Play and Queen Herod, by Tetratema, certainly gave indications of being such upon occasion last season, especially in the Hopeful Stakes, one of the most important juvenile events in the land He won it by four lengths. At times, however, last season Psychic Bid raced disappointingly and trainer Smith attributed it in great measure to a mysterious ailment just above a knee, caused in some manner when Duke Bellizzi suffered his ill-fated fall from the colt in the Youthful yaiaKes. jfsyenic isia was moving so fast in the lead in that race that he bore out badly turning into the stretch and it was while Bellizzi was trying to straighten out the colt that he lost his balance and fell off. Psychic Bid started racing early, winning at the first asking at Havre de Grace in mid-April over a bunch of maidens. He was barely nosed out by Stainforth in the Aberdeen Stakes and might have won but for being roughed in the stretch. Try Sympathy and Black Gift were among those back of him. His Youthful was next. The juvenile star of Mrs. Isabel Dodge Sloanes Brookmeade Stable ran second to Plat Eye in both the Juvenile and National Stallion Stakes at Belmont Park after leading until near the end and trainer Smith was of the opinion the injury suffered in the Youthful might have caused Psychic Bid to shorten stride in those races. At any rate he decided on a long rest for the colt and Psychic Bid did no more running for two months until the Saratoga Special. The Brookmeade colorbearer probably was short in the Special as he tired in the final furlong after giving Plat Eye and Box-thorn a stiff fight for the lead up to that point. In weakening, Psychic Bid fell back to fifth place, but he was beaten only a few paces. That the effort did him much good was amply demonstrated in his next start, the Sanford Stakes, in which he led all the way over the six furlongs to handily defeat Omaha, Boxthorn, Today and other first-class two-year-olds. In the Hopeful Stakes, the son of Chance Play was in top-notch condition, and while he lacked the speed to get to the front in the run down the back stretch, Garner was able to place him close up, with the result that Psychic Bid swept to the front after entering the stretch and he reached the finish with an advantage of four lengths over Rosemont. Esposa was third, Omaha fourth, while other victims included Box-thorn, Balladier, Plat Eye and other good juveniles. Psychic Bid did not seem to care for the mud in the Belmont Futurity, his next start, and he was never close, although later at Narragansett Park in the Weybosset Handicap he was able to defeat All Forlorn, Bam-boula, Patchpocket and others in the heavy going. This was an all-age handicap and he carried four pounds under scale In giving much pondage to his opponents. Just before that race, however, he ran fourth in the Shawomet Stakes, in which he might have been short, victory going to Wise Prince, as the six furlongs were run in the fast time of l:104i. Psychic Bid was top weight under 125 pounds and gave away much to his rivals. Last of his efforts in 1934 was in the Wannamoisett Handicap, in which the Brookmeade colt encountered another heavy track. He was a tiring third at the end of the mile and seventy yards, losing to Bran-non and Blackbirder, both of which were in receipt of a big allowance from him. Psychic Bids record shows him to be a colt of considerable speed and class. Some of his triumphs were achieved after he had led all the way, while others, including the all-important Hopeful, saw him coming from in back of the pace. He also handled himself well under heavy imposts. Unless his Tetratema cross is too much of the wrong kind of influence, Psychic Bid figures to carry his speed over longer distances. Roi Herode blood has done very well in being crossed with American stallions and in fact Psychio Bid is bred similarly to last years Belmont winner, Peace Chance, their sires having been brothers and their dams members of the Roi Herode line.
