THREE-YEAR-OLD PROSPECTS OF 1936 TINTAGEL, Bay Colt, by Sir Gallahad 111. Heloise; Property of I Marshall Field; After His Defeat in the Paumonok Handicap J Won an Overnight Race at Six Furlongs and Has Been Train- J ing Well for the Wood Memorial, the Result of Which Appears j I in this Edition. See Kentucky Derby Book for Past Per- J r formances. I By NOBKIS KOYDEN. j In his first performance as a three-year-old, Tintagel was unable to prove a factor in the Paumonok Handicap, a dash of six furlongs. The son of Sir Gallahad XLT. and Heloise, by Friar Rock, had been expected to run well in that sprint but he weakened in the stretch. If Tintagel cannot hold his own in sprints, which supposedly favor him, he possesses but very little if any promise of going over a distance of ground, and so he is not regarded as one of the outstanding candidates for three-year-old honors this season. ...... Tintagel won the Belmont Futurity last fall, and he was prominent in the running of several other important juvenile events, but he did not impress many experts as being as fine a prospect for the long races this year as colts like Holyrood, Brevity, Grand Slam and Granville. Marshall Fields colt, despite being by Sir Gallahad III., is of the sprinter type, and he runs that way. Just because he doesnt promise so well now is no sign that Tintagel wasnt much of a two-year-old. He was always a leading youngster because of his brilliant speed and precocity. Trainer George Odom brought the colt to the races on June 1 and he won at the first asking. As a matter of fact the Field juvenile won his first three starts and his last three, losing only a trio in between in all of which he displayed good speed into the stretch. In his first outing Tintagel ran five furlongs straightaway In :58 at Belmont to defeat Jean Bart by half a length and three weeks later he outran another field of promising youngsters at Aqueduct, scoring by a length and a half over Gleeman with Sobriety third. Four weeks elapsed until his next appearance, which was at Belmont Park, and this time Tintagel outran such a good colt as Bien Joli, defeating the latter, easing away, by two lengths. On the strength of his triumph over Bien Joli, Tintagel was shipped to Chicago for the Arlington Futurity, for which the track was muddy. Uncovering a brilliant display of speed, the son of Sir Gallahad 321. rushed to he front right after the start and opened up such a long lead that coming into the stretch he appeared to have the race won, but in the final sixteenth of a mile, Grand Slam came from well back to beat him m out by a couple of lengths. Back of the Field colorbearer were many good two-year-olds, including Valevictorian, Nedrow, Coldstream, Sangreal, Snark and White Cockade. Tintagels next start was in the Saratoga Special, in which he was well up from the start and raced up to the pacemaker in the final furlong only to weaken and wind up in fifth position as Coldstream and Red Rain deadheated for first place with Bien Joli third. Odom next sent the colt postward in the Hopeful Stakes and he set the pace until inside the furlong pole, where he shortened stride and was passed by seven horses, yet he was beaten less than four lengths by the victorious Red Rain. After a brief rest Tintagel made his next appearance at Jamaica in an overnight dash of six furlongs and he easily outsprinted Billie Bane, Maxine F. and other fair juveniles. Then in a dash of five and a half furlongs over Belmont Parks straight course, he set the pace from start to finish to defeat Wha Hae by four lengths with Sun Teddy third and Crossbow IL fourth, doing the distance in 1:04. Off that effort he went into the Futurity at six and one-half furlongs to be on top of the pace from the start and through the final quarter to stand off several hard challenges, particularly one from Snark, to draw away in the last sixteenth to defeat Hollyrood by a length, with Jean Bart third and Snark fourth. That race proved Tintagel to be possessed of courage and it certainly demonstrated him to be a champion over the stiiilit course During the winter Tintagel was taken to Hialeah Park to prepare for the Florida Derby, but he suffered a mild injury in a workout from the gate and did not start until the Paumonok at Jamaica, in which he failed his supporters. Although he is a well bred colt, we cannot predict any future for Tintagel in the important three-year-old races because he does not appear to be a true stayer. In the first place he is proportioned like a sprinter and runs like one. Sir Gallahad XLT., sire of Tintagel, has produced numerous good horses that have gone over the longer routes and also some sprinters. Heloise, the colts dam, had out Sgt. Byrne, a good sprinter, before the Futurity winner and she was a sister to the sturdy campaigner Flat Iron and Emotion, the dam of the Futurity winner High Strung.
