Teufel Scores Maiden Victory Over Granville in Wood Memorial Stakes DERBY CHOICE IN FORM . Widener Star Almost Prohibitive Favorite at Louisville. . Bradley Derby Pair Gain Many Admirers Denemark Horse Takes Clark Handicap, Feature. LOUISVILLE, Ky April 25. Joseph E. Wideners Brevity, future book favorite for the Kentucky Derby, held that position with a clean cut victory in the Sophomores Purse, which divided interest with the Clark Handicap as Churchill Downs opened its spring meeting of nineteen days here this afternoon with 15,000 persons in attendance. It was the most auspicious inaugural of the local course in many years, the crowd being larger than for any opening since 1930, while the wagering was about 20 per cent above that of a year ago. In defeating a dozen other three-year-olds, all but Belgian Boy eligible for next Saturdays renewal of the Derby, Brevity scored his third straight triumph of the year and the sixth in seven starts since he first came to the races last August. Because of his position as the Derby favorite, due to hi3 world record equaling performance in the Florida Derby, the son of Sickle Ormonda, was an almost prohibitive favorite and his victory was immensely popular with the large throng. Ideal conditions prevailed for the opening, the weather being clear and warm and the track was fast although inclined to be cuppy: on the inside where Brevity did all of his running. Although the Widener colt defeated E. R. Bradleys Bien Joli by two and a half lengths, with the Milky Way Farms Sangreal another length and a half away in third position, he did not have an easy time until the final sixteenth, where Wayne Wright was able to ease up in his riding. FAST RUN RACE. While the performance of Osmands half-brother was very impressive, the efforts of Bien Joli and Banister, the Bradley Dei by hopes, also called for much favorable comment. Both colts gained through the stretch, Banister especially so, as he had come from far back. Sangreal finished third after having given Brevity a stern battle during the first five-eighths of the seven furlong event. The race was timed in 1:24, but the pace was very fast as Brevity and Sangreal went the first quarter in :22, the half mile in :45 and the six furlongs in 1:10, where the Philadelphia-owned colt began drawing away. Brevity drew number three post position, blinkers being placed on him when he reached the post. He began fast but had to be hustled along to get a position and after the opening sixteenth took a slight lead over Sangreal and He Did, while Bien Joli was fourth, with Wise Duke fifth. Banister had but one horse beaten at the half time ground. Around the turn Brevity and Sangreal raced head and head but they drew away slightly from He Did while Bien Joli continued evenly. The Milky Way colt was slightly in front at this point but when Wright slapped Brevity with his whip at the quarter post the son of Sickle responded by taking command again. Slowly drawing away, Brevity had Sangreal well beaten in the final stages and enjoyed enough margin not to worry about Bien Jolis bid. BANISTER GAINS GROUND. Bien Joli advanced slowly but surely in the final furlong but could not menace Brevity, while easily defeating the wilting Sangreal. In the meantime, Banister had made up much ground to be a strong finishing fourth. Wise Duke finished fifth and He Did sixth. Bien Joli worked out a mile in 1:39 and Banister went a mile and a furlong in 1:51. Silas and He Did also were worked out nine furlongs and were timed in 1:55. Brevity was eased up after his vie- Continued on twenty-second page. TEUFEL MAIDEN VICTORY IN WOOD MEMORIAL STAKES Continued from first page J listening in to the broadcast of the running. The fractions of the running were :23, :47, 1:12, 1:38 and 1:43. A high and cold wind that blew over the course was a bar to faster time. The Parole Handicap at a mile and a sixteenth that followed the running of the Wood, was of feature quality itself in the horses that were attracted. This brought a double for the Brookmeade Stable and for George Woolf when Good Goods duplicated the score of Time Signal in the opening race. The son of Neddie, in a good game effort, was winner over Mrs. Frank K. Hastings Old Story and well back of these Mrs. W. Plunkett Stewarts Chance Ray just beat Malbrouk for third. Right at the start, First Minstrel was bumped badly and Coucci was forced to take up. He never recovered from that misfortune and appeared to sulk all through the running to never reach a real contending position. Time Signal, from the Brookmeade Stable, was winner of the opening five-furlong dash for juveniles when he outgamed Mrs. Parker Comings Merry Maker, and far back of these Hal Price Headleys Clingendaal beat Star Pupil, the favorite, for third. Time Signal left quickly, with Clingendaal in second place, and Crop was showing the way to Star Pupil. The others were in close order and Road Knight was last. Rounding into the stretch, Time Signal lost some ground by going a bit wide, while Merry Maker saved ground to show in front for a few strides. The High Time colt was not through and, responding gamely to the drive of Woolf, came again and, showing an exeallent brand of courage, was over the line winner by a neck. Merry Maker had beaten Clingendaal five lengths for the place, and Star Pupil was another two lengths back. There came a call for the camera in the s-acond race, Flying Gypsy and Cynwyd finishing on the line so closely locked the placing judges called for the electric eye to split them. The machine gave the decision to Cynwyd. Lapped on the pair at the finish came Thatch, and fourth was the portion of Bright Chance. From a good start, Hanford went right out with Flying Gypsy and, rating him along at a smart pace, had soon opened a lead of two lengths. It was not until the stretch was reached that Anderson really called on Cynwyd and as he roused the son of Cherokee, Hanford shook up Flying Gypsy and the duel was on. The Flying Ebony gelding was tiring, but the Hanford ride kept him moving along until it was only in the last stride that Cynwyd dropped his nose down in front. Bright Chance, after moving into third place in the stretch run, tired, and then it was that Thatch closed with a rush that landed third money and he was only beaten a neck and a nose for the major part of the purse. Another rousing finish came out of the third race when Sandy Bill, Epical and En Masse crossed the line well lapped in the order named. Epical and Sandy Bill were the ones to set all the pace. A furlong from home, Sandy Bill had his head in front, but Epical came again in that last furlong and they see-sawed right to the line with Sandy Bill earning a neck decision. En Masse had steadily improved his position after leaving the post rather slowly and he was going better than the two that beat him when he was just a nose back of Epical. A good band of juveniles met in the Canter Purse, run as the fourth race, and it went to Miss A. Pendergasts Half Time, a colt that had some seasoning in California. Hal Price Headleys All Agog took second place, and Mrs. D. Runyons Tap On was third over Pathos.
