RICHER STAKES AT LATONIA Six Events Increased in Added Value From ,500 to ,000 Each. Latonia Derby, With 5,000 Added, Big Feature of Thirty-Seven Days of Sport at Popular Covington Track. LOUISVILLE, Ky., April 25. No stake to bo run during the thirty-seven day spring and summer meeting at Latonia will have less than ,000 added, Col. M. J. Winn, executive director of the Covington course, which opens on Saturday, May 23, announced here today. As the six stakes affected had ,500 added last year, the increase in added money is 100 per cent. They are the Latonia Oaks, for three-year-old fillies; Independence Handicap, for three-year-olds and over; Quickstep Handicap, for three-year-olds and over; Clipsetta Stakes, for two-year-old fillies; Cincinnati Trophy, for two-year-old colts and geldings, and the Enquirer Handicap, for three-year-olds and over. . The Latonia Derby, another fixture and to be renewed on the opening day of the meeting, will carry 5,000 in added money. Exclusively for three-year-olds, the Latonia Derby will be run over a route of a mile and one-quarter. If the winner has won the Kentucky Derby, his owner will receive an additional ,000. Nominations for the seven stakes will close on Wednesday, May 6, and entries should be forwarded to the Latonia Jockey Club, Covington, Ky. , With six stakes worth ,000 each and a 5,000 or 0,000 Derby, Latonia will bid for some of the strongest stables in the country. Owners of many of the leading establishments here have signified intentions of shipping their stables to the Covington track. The distance of the Latonia Oaks has been reduced from one mile and a quarter to a mile and a furlong, and this change is, expected to engender increased interest in this fixture.
