GREAT LOVER, off well and saving ground, was hustled along to withstand several challenges from LYSANDER and win under hard urging. LYSANDER was closest to the winner from the start, made several game attempts to head the latter and went courageously to the finish under hard riding. CHATTER QUEEN, eased back when she lacked the early speed to keep up with the leaders, was permitted to drop too far out of it and, although making up ground in the stretch, never threatened the first two. GOOD POLOTAN made up ground and was going well at the end. RISKY MISS and MORALE were used up attempting to keep pace with the leaders in the early part. FIFTH RACE 1 MILE. DARK COLLEEN was slow to get going but raced up strongly in the back stretch to reach a contending position and, coming fast in the run home, passed BRILLIANT BABY and BONHONEST near the end to finish going away. BONHONEST, in close quarters soon after the start, moved up fast in the back stretch and raced well to the finish, but could not resist the winner. BRILLIANT BABY opened up a good lead in the back stretch and raced RUFLE into defeat, but tired in the last eighth. GOLD SET was in early trouble, came strongly after leaving the back stretch and loomed up dangerously in the stretch, but was shut off when BRILLIANT BABY cut to the rail and lost her chance. RUFLE tired badly. SABINA H. was never a dangerous contender. SHADY PAST beat the gate, but soon dropped back. Scratched 24792 Black Minnie, 105. Overweight Dark Colleen, 1 pound; Careful Nell, 1. MICKEYS MAN was in close quarters going to the first turn, then gained steadily and ivas going gamely at the finish to beat BOILING POINT. The latter displayed good early speed and held on fairly well. COLDWATER made up ground on the inside in the last quarter. ARSON began slowly and was badly outrun all the way. HIS WAY saved ground where possible in the early stages and, getting through an opening .on the inside of SAN RAMON entering the stretch, took a short lead and held sway to the end under hard riding. ZEVAR, taken to the outside rounding the first turn, was dropped down next to the rail in the back stretch, came again to the outside on the far turn to make his move and, carried to the middle of the track while attempting to race around three horses on the stretch turn, was not good enough to overcome the handicap of the ride, although finishing gamely. SAN RAMON set the pace with his rider having difficulty in restraining him in the back stretch, raced gamely when given his head and finished well. MIDSHIPMAN saved ground in the stretch. WAR LETTER was used up chasing SAN RAMON in the early stages and tired. SICKLEBILL was done after making a brief move around the far turn. Scratched 25089 Merry Go Round, 94.
