COMPLETE DERBY TRAINING Granville, Tcufel and Merry Pete in Long Gallops at Louisville. ♦ Granville and Teufel Work One Mile While Merry Pete Goes One Mile and an Eighth. ♦ LOUISVILLE. Ky., April 29.— The important training preliminaries to the Kentucky Derby were completed today when the Wheatley Stables Teufel and Belair Studs Granville, which finished first and second in the Wood Memorial Stakes last Saturday separated by a nose, had their first and only trials over the Downs course this morning, but they were not asked for much by George Tappcn, who is in charge of them, pending the arrival tomorrow of the head trainer Jim Fitzsimmons. Teufel went through his workout over the mile and an eighth course unaccompanied, while Granville had Merry Pete, another Belair representative, as his running mate in his easy mile workout. They were handled by their regular exercise boys. Bien Joli and Banister, which will form the entry of Edward Riley Bradley, were asked to go over the full Derby distance of the mile and one-quarter, with their owner and Barry Shannon coming from Lexington to watch their performances. Bien Joli was far more impressive in his workout than Banister and led him by four lengths at the finish. The Bradley candidates drew the most attention because of the extent of their trials. Both equipped with blinkers, they swung into action at the quarter post, which is the starting point of the Derby, and moved along as a team during the first mile. With both under strong restraint, they went the first quarter in :25%, half mile in :5145, three-quarters in 1:18%, and back to the starting point in 1:44%. At this point Bien Joli forged away from Banister and, running the final quarter in :25 %, he completed the long journey in 2:09-5, going handily. Banister was strongly ridden in the late stages, but could not do better than complete the trial in 2:101,5. Teufel had plenty left in breezing nine furlongs in 1:8716. Breaking at the furlong post, the son of Diavolo and Virginia L. was under restraint as he went the first half mile in :53, the three-quarters in 1:18%, and the mile in 1 :43"„. Although they were not asked for much the little known Merry Pete appeared to go through the trial, in which he accompanied Granville, slightly easier. The two colts began running at the furlong pole and stepped the first half mile in :53 and the six furlongs in 1:19-... They continued together through the final quarter to finish the mile in 1:45%, with both able to go much faster. With no workouts expected tomorrow, the various Derby candidates will take it easy until Friday, when many of them will be asked for short speed brushes to put them on edge for their engagement the following afternoon. *
