NEWMARKET, England, April 29.— In a head finish, Lord Astors Pay Up defeated the Aga Khans Mahmoud in the 128th running of the Two Thousand Guineas, the first of Englands five classic events for three-year-olds here today. At the end of the mile contest, Mrs. J. S. Hands Thankerton was third, three lengths back. There were nineteen starters, none in the overnight field being withdrawn. The unplaced horses included the American-owned Boswell, which carried the colors of William Woodward, and Sir G. Bulloughs Daytona, the future favorite. Pay Up went to the post the choice at 11 to 2. Mahmoud was held at 100 to 8, and Thankerton at 40 to 1. The Woodward colt was 9 to 1. On this victory, Pay Up became one of the favorites for the Derby, which will be run at Epsom on May 27. Twenty-eight winners of the Two Thousand Guineas in previous years went on to win the major classic. Last year the Aga Khans Bahram won the "triple crown" adding the St. Leger to the Guineas-Derby double. • _
