CHOICES HAVE BIG DAY Caravel Third Even-Money Favorite to Win at Downs. • Weather Continues to Favor Louisville Management — Skalkahoe and Miss Prudence Win. ♦ LOUISVILLE, Ky., May 12.— Fortune continued to smile on Churchill Downs for although a rain during the early morning hours left the track in a muddy condition and threatening clouds prevailed until noon, the sun broke through and pleasant weather was on tap the greater part of the afternoon. With the exception of an allowance affair for three-year-olds, the program was given over to the plater division, but the performers furnished interesting sport and despite the change in track conditions the racing was formful. Short priced favorites were successful and the third even money choice of the afternoon scored in the fourth race for two-year-olds when the Millsdale Stables Caravel, which was earning her second straight purse, was an easy winner. Second went to A. N. Goldbergs Stairs with Valdina Farms Dark Prince driving down on the outside to beat the tiring Threems by a nose for third honors. There was a long delay at the post caused by First Times refusal to go into the stalls. She began from outside of the machine and after improving her position gave way rapidly to have only Derby Eve beaten at the end. CORBETT LOSES NO TIME. Nine youngsters started and the veteran Charley Corbett lost no time in establishing b. clear lead with the winner. Caravel was steadied along to the stretch but when Stairs began to shorten her advantage Corbett roused the winner and the finish found her some five lengths before Stairs, which" led Dark Prince by two lengths for second. During the opening half mile Col. Julian and Jay Bee Jay held prominent positions but they tired fast in the final sixteenth and it was no task for Dark Prince and Threems to speed by them. The first real surprise of the afternoon came with the fifth race, when Chimney Top, a C. V. Whitney cast-off. got up to lead ; Die Hard, Hogans Fox and six others to the end of the mile. Ridden by Lee Hardy and under Mrs. L. Barnes colors, the five-year-old Dominant gelding was saved during the run to the stretch but after Die Hard had subdued the tiring Ramrod, Chimney Top steadily wore down Die Hard to be three-quarters of a length before him at the end. While Ramrod quit badly and Hogans Fox held on in fine style to take minor honors. Red Rod, one of the choices, showed nothing to justify it. Under 110 pounds, the winner ran the distance in the creditable time of 1:40*5 and paid 3.80 for each straight. The colors of Theodore E. Muellers locally owned Shady Brook Farm were carried to another victory when Skalkahoe, a heavily supported choice, was an easy winner of the first race, at six and one-half furlongs. Inflame was second and Bill Bleiweiss third. Ridden by Basil James and rushed into a good early lead, the winner finished two and a half lengths before Inflame, which came from well back to lead the tiring Bill Bleiweiss by three lengths for second. For a half mile Ste. Iris held a prominent position, but she weakened fast in the drive. PHOTOGRAPHIC FINISH. The photographic finish was called upon for the second time during the meeting in the second race when Howard Oots Pharo-lar, and Navarre reached the end of the five furlongs a nose apart and five lengths before Regality. The picture showed Pharo-lar, a daughter of Pharamond II., and Olar to be the winner. Robert Dotter, a product of Newport, Ky., was astride his first winner when Pharolar was declared the victor. Racing wide throughout the winner wore down the heavily supported Navarre to nip her at the end. Eleven maiden juveniles were under colors and during the run to the stretch Overtrick and All Round were prominent but gave way j Continued on thirtieth page. Fishers Dixiana when Miss Prudence triumphed in easy fashion over Judge Kavanafh, Furtive and nine other three , i «! io in th» Scotland Farm Purse th.it ■erved aa the third race. The winner, a fashionably-bred daughter of Victorian and Miss Jemima, was scoring her second victory out of nine starts and, after drawing clear of Furtive leaving the back stretch, increased her advantage to be some five lengths before Judge Kavanagh at the end. The latter, which was always the best of the others, wore the tiring Furtive down in the last stages to lead her by a neck.
