BILLY BEE WINS IN A ROMP I Greatly Improved Showing Over Recent Dull Performance. i i Bomar Colorbearer Overlooked by Maryland Fans in Edgar Allan Toe Purse — Average Size Crowd. e ■ BALTIMORE, Md., May 12.— Coming back with a greatly improved effort over his recent dull performance here late last week, the Bomar Stables swift-running four-year-old gelding Billy Bee carried 118 pounds and won his third success of the Maryland spring season. He showed his true form to take honors in the Edgar Allan Poe Purse, an allowance contest over six furlongs that was the best offering of the Maryland Jockey Club at Pimlico today. His victory, scored by a little less than two lengths, was easily achieved when he led every step of the journey. He was not popular with Maryland fans, who failed to overlook his recent dull showing with practically the same sort only a few days ago. Ridden in confident fashion by J. Bryson, the dark bay son of Jean Valjcan smothered his opponents for speed and drove to the end of the six furlongs sprint to take major honors by a length and a half. Accolade, from the locally-owned D. Christmas stable, was the one to earn second honors when he waged a stirring argument with C. V. Whitneys Trumpery to gain that part of the prize by a head. Then came Enthusiasm, six lengths back, to hold a big lead over Sailor Beware, My Colin and Kenty, which completed the field of seven. With no special feature for the twelfth day of the current meeting, a crowd of average size watched the sport at the Hill Top course. Conditions were all that could be desired and the sport was rather interesting, although favorites again failed, only one successful choice being led into the charmed circle in the first six races on the card. In the Edgar Allan Poe Purse little time was wasted at the stall gate, and it found Billy Bee particularly alert to take command immediately, and Bryson permitted him to go into a clear lead in the opening furlong. My Colin was the one to give chase to the Bomar colt, while Sailor Beware, Trumpery, Enthusiasm and Accolade were closely bunched as they followed close up. Leaving the back stretch, Billy Bee widened his early margin to increase his lead to a length and a half. My Colin had fallen back, permitting Trumpery to drive into second place at the turn. G. Rose was driving hard on the Whitney gelding in order to cut down the lead of Billy Bee but Bryson had saved his mount and when shaken up, he easily withstood his rivals to prevail at the will of his rider. With the winner safely entrenched in the van position, a bitter battle was waged for the place award and it was right at the end that Accolade got the decision for that end of the spoils from Trumpery. The afternoon began formfully for turf students, who have been suffering repeated reverses here, when True Tune raced to victory «in the opening event, a dash of four and one-half furlongs. Eight others were under silks to oppose the daughter of Dis Done, and it found Peggy Shippen landing in second place, with Bergere an easy third over the six others. E. De Camillas rode the Hughes filly and had his mount away in the first flight and she was hustled to the front to open up a lead of almost two lengths on Peggy Shippen in the opening quarter mile. These two dominated the running for the remainder of the trip, with the Hughes filly reaching the end of the intermediate journey leading the way by two and one-half lengths. Peggy Shippen had little difficulty in retaining the runner-up position, beating Bergere a length and one-half for that portion of the prize, while Jub Jub was another half dozen lengths back to head the four others that finished. Lady Briar was left when she swerved. The third race for fillies and mares resulted in another upset when Miss Cyllene scored in her first race this year. Her I triumph came in rather easy fashion when she reached the finish leading Night Court by three lengths with Miss Jones, luke warm Choice, a driving third. Moving up from i sixth position on the back stretch, Miss Cyllene engaged Night Court and Our Time] when making the turn for home, went into | a lead of over a length under E. Smiths j urging and dominated the race thereafter. Night Court, holding on gamely after his early indulgence with My Sis and Our Time, managed to save second place by a ! half length. Miss Jones, coming from the rear, got up to gain a head decision over ! Strophe for third. i With a field of ten jumpers racing over two miles in the Grecnspring Steeplechase, spills and peculiar accidents marred the running and only four remained upright to complete the journey. They were rank outsiders in the betting. In this, D. E. Reads Dundrillin was returned winner of the event in easy fashion with The Spy driving into second place and Mrs. A. B. Durants Ice Man, racing coupled with Meredith, easily accounting for third over Her Excellency.
