FAST TRIALS OF PROMINENT PREAKNESS CANDIDATES , 9 c Bow and Arrow, Teufel, Granville and Snark Work Impressively Kentucky Derby Winner, Bold Venture, Expected Today — Workman Will Ride Him — Outlook Now for Fifteen Starters BALTIMORE, Md., May 12.— Developments for Saturdays renewal of the 5,000 added Preakness Stakes occurred thick and fast at Pimlico this morning as four certain starters were sent through their final important trials for the mile and three-sixteenths classic. E. R. Bradleys Bow and Arrow worked a mile and a quarter in 2:08%; Wheat-ley Stables Teufel and Belair Studs Granville went a mile and a furlong, respectively, in 1:53% and 1:54, and Wheatleys Snark did a mile in 1:39%. James Fitzsimmons, chief ►trainer of the Wheatley Stable and Belair Stud horses, came from New York, accompanied by jockey Jimmy Stout, to supervise the final preparations of Teufel, Snark and Granville, and he will remain until after the Preakness running. Stout, who will guide Granville Saturday, was called upon to work each of the three horses this morning. The steady-running Bow and Arrow was the first of the Preakness hopes asked for speed. With Joe Renick, who will ride him Saturday, in the saddle, the Whichone gelding broke into motion at the quarter post and went the first half mile in :48% and reached the three-quarters in 1:14. Black Widow joined him in the back stretch to set the pace for the final five furlongs. The mile was timed in 1:40%, nine furlongs in 1:53% and the full distance in 2:08%. Bow and Arrow, which has done everything asked of him this year by trainer William Hurley, was going in handy fashion at the conclusion of his trial. Snark then was brought out for his test over the mile distance. The Boojum colt broke away in front of the stand and went the opening quarter in :23%, half mile in :48. three-quarters in 1:13% and the mile in 1:39%, having something in reserve at the end. He was eased up an additional furlong in 1:55%. Teufel, winner of the Wood Memorial Stakes but a failure in the Derby, was the third colt to work and he displayed the most speed. The Diavolo colt also began his trial in front of the stand and went the opening quarter in :23% and the half mile in :47%. He reached the six furlongs in 1:12% and Continued on thirtieth page. Even though Teufel was caught in faster time by some watches he finished the workout with something left. A different routine was used by Fitzsim-mons with Granville. After the son of Gallant Fox had been sent through his warm up gallop, he was taken to the paddock where blinkers were added to his equipment. Breaking at the mile post he was timed the opening quarter in :23%; half mile in :49; six furlongs in 1:15; mile in 1:40-/5, and mile and one-eighth in 1:54. Nandi joined him at the far turn to pace Granville through the final five furlongs. All four of the horses carried about 115 pounds each. Fitzsimmons stated today that he had engaged Eddie Litzenberger, who rode him in the Derby, to handle Teufel and that Eddie Arcaro had been obtained to handle Snark. Jean Bart, one of the Walter M. Jeffords hopes, was almost choked in being restrained to a six furlongs trial in 1:20%. He will be asked for a more serious preparation tomorrow. Trainer Preston Burch announced today that he had been successful in engaging Wayne Wright to ride Giant Killer, the other Jeffords Preakness candidate. H. Richards will guide Jean Bart. Pimlico officials have preparations completed for the arrival of Bold Venture and the other Preakness candidates expected from New York. The Kentucky Derby winner is due tomorrow, while the others which may include Bien Joli, Delphinium, Memory Book, Brush Hook and He Did, may arrive Thursday. A field of fifteen starters appeared likely today when J. J. Greely, Shandon Farm trainer, stated that Bright Light was an extremely doubtful starter. The Sun Flag three-year-old recently went through a mile and a quarter workout but he has not trained satisfactorily since. Information was received here that trainer Thomas J. Healey, had decided against sending Tatterdemalion after the Preakness and Raymond Workman has been made available to ride Bold Venture as a consequence. Although defeated by Tatterdemalion, Brush Hook is expected to be shipped here along with Memory Book to represent the Green-tree Stable.
