___.__,.,.__,,__,_,__,__,_,_,__________ I j ! i Here and There OH the Turf j Preakness Field Has Quality Only Five Started in Derby iJ Maryland Hopes Trained Well ยป Memory Book Looms Stoutly j In many respects todays Preakness field possesses more quality than did the line-up foe the Kentucky Derby, although some very good colts and a filly were well back of Bold Venture and Brevity as they staged their thrilling duel through the stretch. Only j five candidates for the Maryland Jockey Clubs great spring special for three-year-olds were contestants in the Derby, the others being colts which were not pointed j for the Churchill Downs classic, with the I exception of Hollyrood. Bold Venture hopes to add his name to that of Omaha, Burgoo King, Gallant Fox and Sir Barton as winner of both the Preakness and Derby, while Granville is anxious to make amends for the , accident that eliminated him from figuring j in the outcome of the Blue Grass special. He ! Did, Grand Slam and Teufel are other | Preakness hopes that participated in the : Derby but if they cant do any better than j they did at Louisville theyre better off in their stalls. However, all of them have trained well enough and wish to redeem themselves if they can. Hollyrood could not make the Derby because he failed to reach the races in proper condition. Quite likely the steady grind he Underwent at his owners farm during tHe winter and spring, while it toughened him up sufficiently, left the Pimlico Futurity winner without the proper dash and poise. The son of High Cloud and Mandy Hamilton | started twice at Jamaica, the second time in the Wood Memorial Stakes, and he appeared listless both times. A lay-off was ordered and it is apparent that some of his liveliness has returned as his final trial for the Preakness was a very satisfactory workout. The Hal Price Headley colt demonstrated last year that he was possessed of considerable quality and if himself this afternoon he will prove very troublesome to those Preakness candidates now held in higher esteem. Among the starters this afternoon will be at least one seeking the honor of having participated in the Preakness, whatever that amounts to. The others are three year-olds which have not been rushed in their preparation this spring and, as may be expected, they have come up to the race in excellent condition, so if they have the ability they will make it interesting for those which already have demonstrated their quality. This group includes Memory Book, Snark, Transporter, Bow and Arrow and Jean Bart. The latter trio have been in Maryland all spring and have trained exceptionally well, as well as raced creditably. Bow and Arrow is unbeaten this season in three starts in which he has beaten some fair company, but even William Hurley, trainer of the E. R. Bradley gelding, doesnt know the extent of his qual- Continued on thirty-third page. Transporter has been to the post only twice, running second in his first effort of the year and winning the second. Since then he has been brought up to the Preakness distance of a mile and three-sixteenths in expert fashion by trainer Selby Burch. Mrs. Marion duPont Somervilles colt, unusually ragged for a son of The Porter, was unable to undergo rigorous training as a youngster, but he has withstood the steady, hard preparation of the past few weeks to have gained admiring attention from the dockers. Jean Bart, a good looking although not large son of Man o War, has won and has been defeated in his races this spring, but the notion is entertained that he hasnt as yet come through with his top effort. It has been the custom to send him out to make or lay close to the pace, but it will not be surprising if Harry Richards uses different tactics in riding Walter Jeffords colt today. A suspicion gaining in strength these past few days is that Memory Book may be the one to beat. The Greentree Stables son of St. Germans and Memento has rounded to form gradually and goes into his engagement with the expectation that the Preakness distance suits him more than it does any other candidate for the race. He is a long strider that may be found at a disadvantage on the turns, but if he suffers no interference Memory Book will be doing a iot of charging through the stretch. Not so much is known of Snarks attitude toward the race. The Boojum colt was found wanting in the Pimlico Futurity last fall and he has done nothing this spring to warrant the belief that the mile and three-sixteenths of the Preakness will suit him any more than did the mile and one-sixteenth of the Futurity. In his lone trial at Pimlico during the week, Snark displayed excellent speed, so his presence may be for the purpose of setting a fast pace that may or may not benefit Teufel, his mate in the Wheatley Stable. The latter is a plodder. Do not be shocked if the result is Memory Book first, Bold Venture second and Granville third.
