MARTINS ROCKINGHAM STRING Good Handicap Horse, Dark Hope, Heads Maryland Sportsmans Stable for Salem Campaign. SALEM, N. H., May 15.— J. W. 5T. Martin, Maryland sportsman, will race a small but capable string of thoroughbreds headed by the handicap performer Dark Hope, at the spring meeting of the New Hampshire Jockey Club at Rockingham Park May 25 to June 13. Dark Hope, the seven-year-old Traumer gelding, will carry the blue and gold Martin silks in the Granite States, Decoration Day and Rockingham Park Handicaps, feature events of the Rockingham spring session. That Dark Hope is at his best can be gleaned from his triumph in the Dixie Handicap at Pimlico last week-end. The Traumer gelding was at his best in the Maryland feature, running the mile and three-sixteenths in track record time. Louis Feustal, developer of the famed Man o War, now training the Martin string, is confident that Dark Hope will be a contender for many handicaps of the New England season if he is not overburdened with heavy imposts. Rockinghams veteran racing secretary H. D. "Jim" Monroe, was in receipt of stake nominations from trainer Feustal today. Included in the nominations were the entrant of Badge of Honor, fast-stepping three-year-old in the Speed Handicap, New England states, and the New Hampshire Handicap.
