Y., May 15.— Laverne Fator, noted jockey, was injured critically today when he jumped or fell from a second-story window of the Jamaica Hospital. He suffered a fractured skull and physicians feared he would die. Fator had been in the hospital since May 11, suffering from acute appendicitis. He had been irrational most of the time, physicians said, making it inadvisable to operate. During his stay in the hospital, physicians added, Fator had "heard voices," the result of his illness affecting his mental condition. Under care of a private nurse, Fator had been confined to a private room. The nurse left the room for only a moment today to get some medicine. When she returned she found the window screen had been pushed aside and her patient was missing. Fator was found unconscious on the pavement be-, low and taken back into the hospital immediately. Fator, a track veteran who had ridden nearly 5,000 horses and won 1,075 races, retired as a jockey five years ago. He had been employed by the Ross and the Ranco-cas Stables. At one time he was teamed with Earl Sande, another noted pilot. He placed second in 822 races and third in 708. He won a total of more than ,000,000 for his employers. In 1926 alone he won 143 races, earning 61,335 for his employers. He piloted Pompey to victory for William R. Coe in the 1925 Belmont Futurity and won 8,480. The next year he rode Scapa Flow in the Futurity and won 5,980. Although he was astride Kentucky Derby entries many times, Fator was unable to pilot a winner in that turf fixture. His great record is worth reproducing, and is here presented: Year. Mts. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. Unpl. P.f.
