PAUL T. IN A CANTER » Romps to His Third Success of Present Meeting at Aurora. » Form Players Fare Well — Rex Regent Noses Out Dorothy W. — Captain Joy Beats Kieva. AURORA, 111., May 18.— C. N. Finchs six-year-old bay gelding. Paul T., gained the distinction of being the first triple winner of the current meeting at the Fox Valley Jockey Clubs course this afternoon when he cantered to victory in the Kankakee claiming event, over a distance of a mile and a sixteenth. Five lengths to the rear of the winner came Brass Buttons, which held a four lengths margin over Spicate. Paul T. was well supported in the betting and his victory marked the success of the third choice of the day, though the track was at its worst for todays program of eight races. Assuming the lead before the first quarter of the journey was completed, Paul T. opened up a safe margin and never left the verdict in doubt. As the stretch turn was reached Paul T. increased his advantage over Brass Buttons, which had followed closest in the wake of the pacemaker from the break, going easily at the finish. In five starts over the Aurora course Paul T. has scored three victories and two third places, thus proving one of the most consistent performers seen in action at the Kane County course. Supporters of the winner received a return of .40 for each invested on the straight end. HEAVY TRACK PREVAILS. Heavy rains of Sunday night put the track in a heavy condition for this afternoons races, but despite the change in the condition of the course the card was not riddled with withdrawals. Seven of the eight races were of a claiming order, with the Kankakee, sixth on the program, serving as the headline attraction of the day. Six went postward for the mile and a sixteenth contest. There was a good turn out of spectators, though there was a threat of rain about mid-day. . Favorite players got away to a good start when Old Fondo graduated from the ranks of non-winners in the opening four and a half furlongs dash for two-year-olds, winning by a margin of five lengths over Eswood. .Topsy Behave finished in third place. It was never a contest insofar as Old Fondo was concerned, for the bay son of Almadel — Paydirt revelled in the heavy footing and took the lead right at the break, adding to his advantage as the race progressed, de- Continued on twenty-second page. ! j | i I I • | I | j j I j PAUL T. Alwintour made it two straight for the form players when the bay gelding stood a hard drive to take down the decision in the second, which was at a distance of five and ! a half furlongs and brought out eight | starters. Bronc Rider was second, a neck j I behind the winner, while Liberty Oak held . on long enough to collect third money. Breaking fast, Alwintour set the pace, but i waa hard pressed during the early stages by j Liberty Oak, and after shaking the challenger | I off the four-year-old gelding had to ] ward off the bid entered by Bronc Rider during the last furlong of the dash. The streak of favorites was temporarily broken in the third event, another dash at five and a half furlongs, when Miss Ritz defeated Ivy Maxwell, the choice, by a length. Elanac was third at the conclusion of the trip. Overhauling Dilwin in the first quarter of the spin, Miss Ritz continued to show the way to her rivals for the remainder of the race, and, while Ivy Maxwell was gaining steadily on the winner in the final stages, the black filly was in no manner threatened. A close finish resulted in the mile and seventy yards fourth event, with Rex Regent nosing out the fast-finishing Dorothy W., which held a head advantage over Can-, teron at the conclusion of the journey. Sav-jing considerable ground by racing close to the inner rail, Rex Regent got to the front in the last sixteenth but had all he could do to stave off the stretch bid of Dorothy W. All of the first three thoroughbreds in the blanket finish were outsiders in the betting, while the favorite Deferred drew up in sixth place. Making his first start since last February, Captain Jcy took down the decision in a diivc with Kieva. the favorite, in the six furlongs dash that was fifth on the program. Julia Grant was best of the others and accounted for third money. Rushing into the lead before reaching the stretch turn, Captain Joy opened up a good gap on Julia Grant and appeared to have everything safe, but Kieva gained in rapid manner under hustling tactics and was running over the winner when the finish line was reached. Two Brooms made a walkaway of the seventh race, mile and seventy yards event, winning by the wide margin of eight lengths over Captain Danger, with Prince Ballot, the choice, finishing in third place.
